Bare rocks, swimming coves and green spaces ideal for walking define Hamburgsund. The sea-filled rift valley separates the mainland from Hamburgö. A ferry crosses the strait; hiking trails offer views of it, and a day trip takes you paddling through it. There are also swimming spots and historical traces that each give Hamburgsund and Hamburgö their own distinctive character.

Strait, ferry and paddling trip

The Hamburgsundsleden ferry service runs between Hamburgsund and Hamburgö in northern Bohuslän. The ferry route is 130 metres long, and the crossing takes three minutes. Check the operating information before travelling. For a different way to get around, there is a day trip starting in Hamburgsund that takes you paddling through the strait between Hamburgsund and Hamburgö. This gives you the choice of a short ferry crossing or a day on the water, depending on how much time you have and how you want to experience the strait.

Hiking trails and views

The Bergaleden hiking trail follows paths and old tracks around Hagberget and offers views of the strait between Hamburgö and the mainland. An older municipal nature guide also lists a hiking route on Hamburgö from the ferry landing via Vänd igen and the so-called Elefantstigen to Sandvik. It also describes the gravel-surfaced Elefantstigen as accessible to wheelchair users. Check the route and access conditions before your visit, as the description is out of date. The two routes can be distinguished by their described features: Bergaleden goes around Hagberget and offers views, while the route on Hamburgö continues to Sandvik.

Comparing two swimming spots

Norra Ejde Pluret is a municipal swimming spot in Hamburgsund with sand, a bathing jetty, parking and a toilet; it is suitable for children. Boviken is on Hamburgö and also has sand, a bathing jetty and a toilet, as well as a diving tower; this swimming spot is also suitable for children. The two places therefore share several features. If you are choosing based on facilities, Norra Ejde Pluret has parking, while Boviken has a diving tower.

Local history and culture

Hamburgsund was first mentioned as a customs station in 1585. A considerable number of the older houses and boathouses around the strait have been preserved. During the 18th-century herring period, there were several blubber-boiling works along the sheltered strait between Hamburgö and the mainland. These details point to different aspects of local history: the early mention as a customs station, preserved buildings and the blubber-boiling works of the herring period.

Hamburgsund Church is a wooden church that was inaugurated in 1915. Its nave has a tower at the southwest end and a pentagonal chancel at the northeast end. Another tangible memorial is the play ship NolhĂ´tten at Hjalmars Kaj, which commemorates the skipper Stellan Johansson and his NolhĂ´tten.

Stage and events

Scen pĂĄ BĂ´nn is an open-air stage in an old quarry for music, entertainment and theatre. In recent years, events held there have also included children's theatre weeks. The Scen pĂĄ BĂ´nn association has been responsible for the venue since spring 2010 and aims to offer events and activities there year-round, with a focus on the summer season. If you want to plan your trip around a particular programme, check the event dates.

A nearby summer event, Hornbore Ting, is held every year at the Hornborg castle ruins. It is a Viking-themed event with an accompanying market. Here too, it is worth checking the specific dates when planning your trip.
