Railway History and Vehicles
Around 2,600 exhibits of real railway vehicles in the outdoor area of the Railway Museum and a temple stele erected in 1689 showcase two distinct cultural themes in Uiwang-si. There is also a bird ecology museum, a rail bike course and views from Moraksan. When planning your trip, it is worth first choosing your main focus: railway history, temple culture, birdwatching or scenery.
The Railway Museum presents the history of railways in South Korea as an engaging educational destination. It holds nine registered cultural properties, including the President’s salon car and the official car of the commander of the UN forces stationed in Korea. The outdoor area contains around 2,600 exhibits of real railway vehicles. This brings together two perspectives: the history of railways in the country and actual vehicles displayed as exhibits. Anyone interested in transport history will find both a broader historical context and specific examples identified from the collection.
Temple Culture with Traces from Different Periods
Cheonggyesa Temple is located at 475 Cheonggye-ro in Uiwang, on the mid-slope of Cheonggyesan. The traditional temple is a cultural heritage site designated by Gyeonggi-do Province. The grounds contain a commemorative stele erected in 1689 about the temple’s history, which is also designated as provincial cultural heritage. Nearby is Geungnakbojeon Hall, believed to date from the late Joseon period. The two landmarks also differ in their dating: a year is given for the stele, while the hall’s date remains an estimate. This contrast offers a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in temple history and historic architecture.
Birdwatching and a Rail Bike Course
The Uiwang Bird Ecology Science Museum focuses on birds that breed at Wangsong Lake and on natural ecology. Visitors can learn about, observe and experience the birds firsthand. The themed science museum opened on April 24, 2012. Telescopes for birdwatching are available on the rooftop terrace, which also offers views of the surrounding landscape. The museum thus combines learning about ecology and breeding birds with a dedicated place for observation.
At Uiwang Rail Park, the main attraction is a rail bike course that circles a lake near Seoul. The park includes a photo area, a bird habitat area and a speed course. Compared with the science museum, the focus here is on the course and the park’s different areas. When choosing between them, you can consider whether you prefer nature-focused learning and birdwatching or a rail bike course with a variety of themed areas.
Views and Getting Your Bearings
From the summit of 385-meter-high Moraksan, views extend over Uiwang, Anyang, Gunpo, Gwacheon and Seoul. These named destinations give the viewpoint a regional perspective and distinguish it from the collections and historic buildings.
A specific walking route is also described for Wangsong Lake Park: the park is about a 20-minute walk from Exit 1 of Uiwang Station on the line toward Suwon. You can use this approximate time as a guide when planning this route.
