Hwaseong Fortress encloses the center of Suwon in Gyeonggi-Do. Built from stacked stone and brick, the fortress dates back to the Joseon Dynasty. Its walls are 5.74 kilometers long and enclose an area of 130 hectares. It has four main gates and numerous defensive structures, including water gates, observation towers, command posts, multiple-arrow-launching towers, firearms bastions, corner towers, secret gates, signal towers, bastions and bunkers. This brings both the course of the fortifications and the variety of their structures into view.

Fortresses and Royal History

The Namhansanseong Trail offers five routes that run closely along the fortress walls. Namhansanseong Fortress also includes a temporary palace: during the war, it served as a refuge for the royal family and as a temporary capital. The paths along the walls and the palace’s history offer different ways to explore the fortress complex.

In Yeoju, Yeongneung is the shared tomb of King Sejong, the fourth ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, and Queen Soheon. Here, a royal tomb takes center stage, while Hwaseong and Namhansanseong are defined by their fortress walls.

Tradition, Craft and Flavor

The Korean Folk Village presents traditional culture from the late Joseon period through restored houses, cultural classes and other interactive experiences. Seasonal performances featuring folk music, equestrian martial arts and traditional wedding ceremonies round out the program. The village also has a family-friendly amusement park with 15 attractions. The number and selection may change; if a performance or the amusement park is central to your visit, it is best to check the current offerings in advance.

At Icheon Ceramics Village, you can watch pottery being made and buy ceramics directly. There are currently about 80 pottery workshops with around 300 operating kilns; the availability of individual workshops may vary. At Icheon Ye's Park, some workshops offer pottery classes where you can create your own pieces. Since offerings vary by operator, contact the workshop directly in advance if you would like to take a class.

Gwangmyeong Wine Cave adds a culinary touch: visitors can sample and buy Korean wine there. As operating details may change, check current visitor options before your visit.

River Landscapes and Forest

Dumulmeori is where the Bukhangang and Namhangang rivers meet. The site is also known for a landing stage for a historic ferry and three zelkovas, about 400 years old, that appear as one large tree. If you are planning a ferry ride, check the schedule in advance.

Jungmisan Recreational Forest offers a different kind of landscape: dense clusters of trees define the forest, along with views over the Namhangang.

Places of Remembrance and Special Access

The Freedom Bridge from the Korean War is preserved at Imjingak Resort. The Paju Imjingak Peace Gondola crosses the Civilian Control Zone; check current operating details in advance. The Dora Observatory has specific access requirements: individual visits are not allowed, and access is only possible through the DMZ Peace Tour. The tour departs from Imjingak Pavilion after a reservation. Plan your visit with a reserved tour and check the current access requirements.
