Buyeo-gun combines a distinctive riverside landscape with traces of Baekje history: Busosan Mountain, 106 meters high, rises from the plain. Temple complexes, archaeological finds, and the National Museum shed light on different aspects of Buyeo’s history. This raises a useful question for planning your trip: would you like to focus mainly on historical connections, or put the landscape and river at the center?

Baekje history through temples and finds

Neungsan-ri Temple Site was a royal temple established after Baekje moved its capital to Sabi. Neungsa is another name for the site. Its history is therefore closely tied to the change in the location of the capital. Its setting also helps with orientation: Neungsan-ri lies in a valley between the Naseong Fortress wall and the royal tombs of Buyeo.

A specific archaeological find connects the site to a year: the gilt-bronze incense burner of Baekje was discovered in 1993, during the second excavation of the temple complex. It is designated National Treasure No. 287. If you are interested in archaeological discoveries, this find provides a clearly defined point of reference in the history of the site.

Another story of discovery concerns the Gunsu-ri Temple Site. The Chiljido, a seven-branched sword, was excavated there. In connection with a similar sword in Japan, it is considered one aspect of cultural exchange between Baekje and Japan. The cautious interpretation makes the comparison itself interesting: the sword points to a possible connection, not a definitive explanation of the exchange.

The Sabi period and Buyeo National Museum

Buyeo National Museum specializes in the research, study, and preservation of Baekje culture from the Sabi period, 538 to 660. This period provides a clear framework for understanding the history. You can distinguish between the museum’s broad cultural focus and the individual stories of temple sites and finds. Those who want to explore cultural history primarily through a particular period will find a different approach here than by looking at individual archaeological discoveries.

Busosan and the Baekma River

The landscape also provides distinctive points of reference. Busosan rises from the plain and borders the Baekma River to the east and north. Busosanseong Fortress, designated Historic Site No. 5, stands on the mountain. This brings together the mountain’s shape, its relationship to the river, and a named historic structure—a focus that differs from the stories of archaeological finds.

Nakhwaam Rock Cliff offers another perspective on the river: it is especially easy to see from a boat on the Baekma River. If you would like to include this view in your plans, check in advance whether boat trips are currently available.

Choose the focus for your trip

Those interested in history can consider the temple sites, the 1993 discovery, and the interpretation of the Chiljido sword together. Those more interested in the landscape and river can use Busosan’s height and location, as well as the distinctive view of Nakhwaam from the water, as points of reference. This way, your hotel search starts with a specific theme rather than a generic travel itinerary.
