The ria coast, Baekje sites, and historic temples reveal different sides of Chungcheongnam-Do. When planning your trip, it helps to decide first whether coastal scenery, history, or a particular experience will be your main focus.

Coastal scenery among tidal flats, dunes, and rocks

Taean Coastal National Park encompasses the Taean Peninsula and Anmyeondo. Its coastline is 198 kilometers long; the park includes 27 beaches and covers an area of 388,604 square kilometers. Along the ria coast, tidal flats, dunes, oddly shaped rocks, and numerous islands define the landscape. As Korea’s only coastal national park, it brings together diverse coastal ecosystems. These figures convey the scale of the area, while its varied coastal features describe its character.

Sunsets at Kkotji Beach are well known, with views of the Halmibawi and Harabibawi rocks. Daecheon Beach offers different attractions: visitors can ride sky bikes and zip lines, and the Boryeong Mud Festival is held there. If you’re planning to attend the festival, check the current dates before your trip.

Migratory birds and environmental education

Seosan Birdland was developed to systematically protect and manage Seosan Cheonsuman as a globally renowned migratory bird area, and to promote ecological tourism and environmental education. The exhibition hall features specimens, videos, and audio recordings relating to nearly 200 migratory bird species from Cheonsuman. Both the migratory bird area and its biodiversity are central here. Individual exhibits may change; check the latest information if you’re planning a visit.

Baekje heritage and architecture from different eras

In Buyeo, the Gwanbuk-ri archaeological site and Busosanseong Fortress are part of the Baekje Historic Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Haemieupseong offers a different historical perspective: this walled town was built as a military fortress in the early Joseon period and is considered one of the best-preserved walled towns from that era. These two examples offer different ways to explore history—a Baekje-era archaeological site and fortress, and a later military installation.

Temple buildings also provide specific points of reference when choosing what to visit. The Daeungjeon Hall at Sudeoksa Temple was built in 1308 and is considered Korea’s oldest surviving wooden building. The Guksadang Hall at Magoksa Temple dates to 1796 and is now used as a shrine to local mountain spirits. If you’re interested in architectural history, you can compare these details with visits to other cultural sites in the region without assigning the buildings to the same era.

Gungnamji Pond in Buyeo was the site of Baekje’s former second palace; the pond is also associated with the legend of Seodongyo. The Seodong Lotus Festival is held there every July. Since the exact festival dates matter for trip planning, check the current dates in advance.

Experiences to choose based on your interests

The Yedang Tourist Area includes a 402-meter suspension bridge, a musical fountain, a monorail, walking trails, and camping facilities. At Agroland Taeshin Farm, hands-on dairy activities take center stage: visitors can milk cows and feed calves and cows. Participation requirements may change, so check which activities are currently available before your visit. The offerings are distinct: one is about facilities in a tourist area, the other about farm activities.

Regional traditions and choosing where to stay

Myeoncheon Dugyeonju is designated as Korean Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 86-2. The liquor is made and aged over a period of 100 days; a training center is located in Dangjin-si.

Use the places mentioned as a guide when deciding what to visit, and check dates or current details for festivals, exhibitions, and facilities in advance. This keeps your accommodation search aligned with your own sightseeing plans, rather than turning the various attractions into a supposedly fixed route.
