There are several ways to focus a trip to Javorje: the Meteorite Trail, the Javorje–Žetina–Javorje hiking trail, and sacred art. The two hiking trails have different starting points and destinations; guided hikes on both routes are also held every year. When planning your stay, you can first consider whether you want to focus on the meteorite find, a particular hike or art history.

Hiking Trails and Their Destinations

The Meteorite Trail begins in Javorje, where a replica of the meteorite that was found is displayed. From there, it leads to the spot where the meteorite fell to Earth. The find is therefore a focus both at the starting point in Javorje and at the route’s destination. A route description with a clearly named destination can help you choose if you want to plan your hike around this noteworthy find.

The Javorje–Žetina–Javorje hiking trail begins in a car park in Javorje, in front of Gostilna Blegoš. It is described as somewhat longer, but by no means difficult. This distinguishes it from the Meteorite Trail, whose described point of interest is the impact site. For your planning, the relevant trail name and starting point are especially useful: both routes begin in Javorje, but the second starts specifically at the car park in front of Gostilna Blegoš.

The Loška Cycle Route also passes through Javorje. The 390-kilometre cycling route runs via Četena Ravan, Murave, Javorje and Poljane nad Škofjo Loko. This offers a different scale for trip planning than the two hiking trails: if you are interested in cycling, you can see Javorje as part of this longer route, rather than associating the place only with local hikes.

Guided Hikes Throughout the Year

A guided hike on the Meteorite Trail takes place every April. It starts at 10 a.m. in Javorje. Check the exact date before your trip. This lets you plan your April outing around the actual guided hike, without confusing its starting point with that of the other hike.

A guided hike on the Javorje–Žetina–Javorje trail is scheduled every year on 25 June. It starts at 9 a.m. in front of Gostilna Blegoš. When planning your trip, it is important to match the dates to the routes: the April guided hike is on the Meteorite Trail, while the guided hike on 25 June is on the Javorje–Žetina–Javorje trail. Check the exact schedule for the relevant date before your trip.

Sacred Art in Javorje

The artworks offer another way to explore Javorje. The chapel in Javorje houses a Gothic Pietà dating from around 1440 and features frescoes by Štefan Šubic from 1861. A Pietà depicts Mary with the body of Christ. These two details span a work of art from the 15th century and frescoes from the 19th century.

In the Church of sv. Tilna in Javorje pri Poljanah, three altars by Štefan Šubic were created in 1888–1889. The artist is thus also associated with a later body of work in a church. Together with the 1861 frescoes, this provides a chronological comparison between two artistic works by Štefan Šubic, while the Pietà represents an earlier art-historical reference.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

For planning your trip, these themes can be clearly distinguished: the Meteorite Trail leads to the impact site and has a guided hike in April; the Javorje–Žetina–Javorje trail is described as somewhat longer but not difficult, and its guided hike is scheduled for 25 June. The Loška Cycle Route also offers a cycling route through Javorje. Sacred art adds a distinct cultural dimension to the outdoor activities. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide on your main interest and the relevant date, then tailor your search for your stay in Javorje.
