In Škofja Loka, you can combine cultural sites, marked trails and natural heritage to suit different interests for your trip. When planning, it makes a difference whether you set aside time for the museum and theatre, look for a guided discovery of the old town, or consider longer routes through the hills. Crafts and culinary experiences are also among the options; some experiences need to be arranged in advance.

Culture, History and Crafts

Loka Castle houses the Škofja Loka Museum. Its collections cover archaeology, history, cultural history, art, ethnology, natural history and sport. The castle was first mentioned in 1215. The different collections offer a range of starting points for a museum visit, from historical topics to art and natural history.

Loka Stage is a theatre with a tradition of more than a hundred years. Several international and Slovenian dramas are staged there each year; individual productions may change. If you are interested in the performing arts as well as the collections, this offers another cultural focus. The DUO Arts and Crafts Centre offers organised demonstrations by craftspeople and workshops in traditional skills. This expands the options with hands-on insights into crafts.

Hiking Trails and Routes to Suit Your Interests

The Škofja Loka Hills are crossed by numerous well-maintained and marked hiking trails. The trails are suitable for family outings, relaxation and more challenging hikes. This gives you flexibility in choosing a hiking theme, although not every trail need be equally suited to all these purposes. The Loka Mountain Trail crosses the highest peaks of Lubnik and Blegoš and has 32 checkpoint stamps. If you are looking for a route with named peaks and stamp checkpoints, this offers specific points of reference.

Romuald's Path takes a different approach: the interactive trail has 13 stations and starts and ends at the “Passion Room” at Mestni trg 42. The interactive tour lasts about 1.5 hours and includes a game, a competition and 13 challenges. You can therefore allow roughly this amount of time for the tour; it combines the stations with interactive tasks. The Three Castles Path starts at Loka Castle and leads past the ruins of the Tower on Krancelj and Wild Loka (Divja Loka) Castle.

There is also a named option for cycling trips: the marked Loka Cycle Route is 390 kilometres long and divided into 13 stages. Its length and number of stages give an overview of the route’s scale, but do not specify the time needed for any one stage. So rather than comparing this long-distance cycling route with a short hike or the interactive circular trail, consider what kind of activity and schedule you are looking for.

Natural Heritage and Puštal

Godešič Meadows are considered zoological and forestry natural heritage. Various wild animals can be observed in Kevderc, Loka’s most famous cave. A short side passage at the cave entrance leads to Lubnik cave. The cave area is also known for archaeological finds, including Lubnik-type pottery and stone tools. The landscape thus combines nature watching with an archaeological dimension.

Puštal offers another cultural and historical focus. The Path to Puštal themed trail shares stories about how people lived in the past and about Puštal’s connection with combs and frogs. Puštal Castle is privately owned; the castle courtyard is not open to visitors. The castle houses the Church of the Holy Cross, decorated with the 1706 fresco “Descent from the Cross,” attributed to Giulio Quaglio the Younger.

Planning Crafts, Food and Travel

At a workshop, you can make a honeybread using a wooden mould, learn the recipe and receive two additional honeybreads to take home. You should arrange your participation in advance. “Tasty Škofja Loka Steps” is a guided culinary experience through the old town and requires a reservation. If you are planning these activities, check what advance arrangements are needed before setting your dates.
