Železniki offers insights into ironworking, crafts, local history, and outdoor activities. Muzej Železniki showcases a range of local trades, while Plavž tells the story of ironworking in the past. If you prefer to get involved yourself, you can visit a workshop or solve challenges in an interactive experience. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests without combining the different activities into a single programme.
Local History and Crafts
Muzej Železniki is located in Plavčeva hiša. Its collections cover ironworking, woodworking, slate roofing, lace-making, and Dražgoški kruhki. This means the museum’s scope extends beyond ironworking to include several craft themes. The museum has a gallery for occasional museum and art exhibitions, so exhibition dates may vary. A separate permanent sports collection is on display at Športna dvorana Železniki.
Plavž is the only surviving structure from Železniki’s ironworking era and is protected as a technical monument. It is the surviving remnant of a blast furnace for smelting iron ore, dating from 1860. Iron ore was last smelted at Plavž in 1902; this date also marks the official end of ironworking in Železniki. An earlier date refers to a different building: Plnada was built in 1614 by Friulian blacksmiths from Palmanova. Together, these dates provide a timeline without reducing the buildings to a single story.
Houses and gardens also offer a way to explore local history. The “Sprehod po starih Železnikih” walking tour introduces houses where well-known residents of Železniki lived or were born. Egrov vrt is in Racovnik, Železniki, and was once owned by ironworks owner Johan Globočnik. The two places offer different perspectives: the walking tour leads to houses connected with well-known residents, while Egrov vrt is associated with a former owner.
Traditions and Hands-On Activities
On the eve of Gregorjevo, the “Luč v vodo” tradition is observed at the only pond in Železniki, behind Plnada. If you are planning a visit around this tradition, you can use this specific place and time as a guide. Another hands-on option is the Dražgoški kruhki workshop at TIC Železniki: visitors learn how they are made and make their own Dražgoški kruhek. The workshop is offered from January 1 to December 31; arrange your date in advance, as scheduling may vary.
Forest Knowledge and Activities
The Kres Forest Trail starts in Železniki and teaches visitors about important tree species, their characteristics, and life in the forest. It offers a distinct theme alongside the historical and craft activities. Športni park Dašnica has a pump track, athletics facilities, a beach volleyball court, basketball and small-sided football courts, a children’s playground, and a picnic area. If you plan to use the picnic area, check the reservation terms in advance.
“Pobeg iz mesta” (“Escape town”) is an interactive experience featuring tasks, riddles, tests, and locked challenges. Participants solve them to uncover the secret of the ironworks owner’s ingot. The experience is suitable for families and groups of two to six people. For planning purposes, it is advisable to confirm the participation terms in advance, as booking arrangements may change.
For the RATITOVEC TRAIL, the 2026 route description combines the KLASIK and PANORAMSKI runs. In the final third, the route crosses the slopes of Jelovica on its way back to the starting point in Železniki. This information refers to the 2026 route description; future editions may differ. Železniki thus offers a range of distinct attractions: local history and crafts, a forest trail, sports facilities, and a route with a clearly defined description.
