Gorenja Vas offers several starting points for planning your trip: Družinski park Log lies on the western edge of the town and features playgrounds, adventure and walking trails, and a viewpoint. Cycling and hiking routes each have their own focus; at Ivan Regen Square and the Church of St. John the Baptist, art, architectural history, and a regular market take center stage. You can tailor your stay to whether you prefer spending time outdoors or exploring the town’s cultural attractions.

Trails and Distances

A cycling path runs through Družinski park Log to the settlement of Hotavlje. The Gorenja vas–Poljane Municipality Cycling Circle is on a different scale: it is 115 km long. The Gorenja vas–Poljane Municipal Walking Circle covers more than 85 km. This makes it easy to distinguish between the two routes based on your preferred way of getting around. The Walking Circle roughly follows the boundaries of the Municipality of Gorenja vas–Poljane and leads to especially beautiful viewpoints.

On newly built sections of the Walking Circle, the route’s dedicated markers show the way. The final checkpoint is at Gostilna Jager in Gorenja vas. As details and markers may change, it is advisable to check the route guide before setting out. The distances give you a first indication of the scale of the two circles; choosing between them starts with deciding whether you want to travel on foot or by bike.

A shorter themed route is “Along The Traces Of The Rupnik Line.” It starts at the cemetery in Gorenja vas and is suitable for family members of all ages. Along the way, it passes former barracks, numerous bunkers, and the remains of the accommodation used by the fortification builders, before continuing to the distinctive Bishop's bunker (Škofov bunker). The route thus combines the trail itself with visible traces of the former fortifications.

Church, Square and Monthly Market

The Church of St. John the Baptist in Gorenja vas dates back to the 14th century; it was first mentioned in 1623. Its vaults were painted using true fresco technique around 1700. The bell tower also has a distinctive architectural character: its two-tiered lantern roof, with its varied design, features volutes and decorative vases and is in the 19th-century late Baroque style. Its architectural history thus brings together several different periods. Walkers can continue to the church from Neško’s Footbridge.

Ivan Regen Square is adorned with the fountain “Fountain of Love in the Time of Crickets,” a work by academically trained sculptor Metod Frlic. In good weather, locals and tourists sit and relax in the square, listening to the murmur of the water. The Market of Agricultural Crops and Products takes place in the square on the second Saturday of every month. Check the current calendar before your visit so you can plan around market day.

Planning Your Stay

When choosing accommodation in Gorenja Vas, start by deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: hiking, cycling, or the town’s cultural attractions. Then compare the stated location of specific options with the places you plan to visit. If the market day matters to your plans, check the current calendar as well.
