A house dating from 1885 to 1890, a thatched outbuilding and church ruins from the 15th century give Babiči a distinctive cultural and historical character. At the same time, two cycling routes pass through the village. Architectural history and cycling stand as separate highlights; when choosing a route, different factors matter, such as distance, difficulty, course and bicycle type.
Traditional Rural Architecture in Babiči
An old house dating from 1885 to 1890 stands near Komareta in Babiči. A formerly single-room house in Babiči near Kamareta is now used as a stable. Describing it as formerly single-room refers to its original form; its current use as a stable is a separate aspect of the building. At Babiči 26, there is also a thatched “lupa” outbuilding. It is used for carts and for storing other items. Together, these examples illustrate different facets of the village’s rural architecture: a specific date, a present-day use and an outbuilding with clearly defined functions.
Church Ruins and Architectural History
Above Babiči, you can see the ruins of a church dating from the 15th century, dedicated to Saint John, also known as Ivan. A Gothic triumphal arch with Gothic structural elements has been preserved. The church nave was altered in the 17th century. The date of the ruins and the later alteration of the nave mark different phases of construction. Visitors interested in architecture will find a specific surviving architectural feature here, alongside information about the church’s dedication and age.
The Landscape and the Koper Surroundings
Fields and vineyards form part of Babiči’s agricultural landscape. In the green rural surroundings of Koper, typical villages and numerous cycling, hiking and themed trails shape the landscape between the sea, the hills of Istria and the Karst coast. This wider regional context adds a variety of landscape and trail themes to the view of the fields and vineyards in the village.
Two Cycling Routes Through Babiči
The challenging “Kdor išče, ta najde (K15)” cycling route is 38 kilometres long and passes through Babiči. It runs from Vanganel via Babiči towards Pomjan. Highlights along the route include Poljanska buža, the Supot waterfall and several old mills. Its length, difficulty and route highlights provide a concrete framework for planning a cycling trip.
The “Sui sentieri della “Toscana Istriana”” route follows a circular course from Marezige via Babiči and onwards towards Župančiči. It is suitable for MTB, EMTB and gravel bikes. In the features described, it differs from the K15: here, the circular course and bicycle types take centre stage, while the K15 is characterised by its distance, difficulty and views.
For trip planning, the themes can be clearly distinguished: the houses and church ruins give Babiči a cultural and historical character, while the two cycling routes offer different points to consider when choosing a route. The village’s agricultural landscape, with its fields and vineyards, and the varied rural surroundings of Koper are additional features.
