From Koper, a route runs along the Slovenian coast to coastal towns such as Izola, Ankaran, Portorož and Piran. Ankaran is therefore one of the coastal destinations mentioned; Koper offers its own focus on the city, with architecture, museums and a circular route. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these places and their different offerings as separate parts of your itinerary.

Koper: Venetian-Inspired City Culture

Koper’s lively center is characterized by narrow streets and a strong Venetian architectural heritage. A notable landmark is the Koper Bell Tower, also known as the City Tower: at 54 meters tall, the tower is an example of Romanesque defensive architecture and offers views over the city and its surroundings. Its bell was cast in Venice in 1333 and is considered the oldest still-functioning bell in Slovenia.

The Koper Regional Museum displays archaeological, art-historical, historical, cultural-historical and modern-history collections in its main building. Special glasses are used to view certain works of art in three dimensions. The museum’s gallery is located in the neighboring building at 23a Kidričeva Street. It hosts rotating temporary exhibitions organized by the museum or presented as guest exhibitions.

The ground floor of the Praetorian Palace houses a tourist information center and an old pharmacy. Taverna Koper also connects the city’s history with today’s cultural program: it was built around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries next to the walls of the old town and the port, as a main salt storehouse. Today, it serves as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, workshops and other events; the specific program may vary.

The K5 circular route is described as 27 kilometers long and taking 2 to 2.5 hours. It passes through Koper, Bertoki, Škofije, Plavje, Urbanci, Tinjan and Miši (Dekani), then returns to Koper via Bertoki. The route starts at a parking lot and follows the Health and Friendship – Parenzana (D-8) cycling route. This section runs parallel to the highway along the Škocjanski zatok nature reserve. The stated distance and duration provide a concrete basis for planning your time; before setting out, you can check the current route conditions.

The Škocjanski zatok nature reserve is located near Koper and covers 122 hectares. It is home to 259 bird species, and their number continues to grow. Brackish and freshwater habitats characterize the area. Almost three-quarters of it is covered by a brackish-water lagoon with nesting islands, salt marshes and mudflats, providing a habitat for rare animal and plant species.

Wine Tasting with Different Arrangements

The Vinakoper wine boutique offers a tasting corner for independent tastings by individuals and groups of up to ten people. This tasting takes place exclusively on the boutique premises and does not include a tour of the wine cellar. For groups of more than ten people, Vinakoper instead offers guided wine cellar tours with tastings, by prior notice and appointment. As visitor arrangements may change, it is advisable to confirm the details in advance.
