Mining history and nature trails offer two different ways to explore Hrastnik. At the museum and historical sites, you can discover subjects such as glassmaking and miners’ lives; the Pot SREČNO connects nature with industrial heritage. There are also hikes, events and regional dishes. Which of these aspects you focus on depends on whether you are mainly looking for culture, activity or a particular event.

Museum and historical sites

The Hrastnik Museum is housed in a former German school building. Its collections cover archaeology, glassmaking, the chemical industry, coal mining and puppet theatre. The subjects therefore range from early traces to industry and culture. If you are particularly interested in working history, glassmaking, chemistry and mining are clearly identified areas of focus; archaeology and puppet theatre offer different perspectives.

Mlakarjevo stanovanje is designated a cultural monument of local importance. In an old miners’ colony, two rooms of a former miner’s apartment have been preserved. These rooms give the subject of housing a tangible historical form. Villa de Seppi offers a different architectural connection: it was built on the model of Miramare Castle near Trieste. A church in the centre of Hrastnik dates from 1936.

The town’s history also reaches further back: in the local community of Steklarna Hrastnik, near a petrol station, there is a Roman settlement dating from the 1st to the 4th century. The Hočijeva galerija occasionally displays works by the painter Leopold Hočevar, who was born in Hrastnik. If you want to plan a visit specifically to see his work, check the gallery’s current programme in advance.

Hiking trails and route options

The themed hiking route Pot SREČNO passes through Laško, Hrastnik, Trbovlje and Zagorje ob Savi. Of its total 29.7 kilometres, 9.3 kilometres lie within the municipality of Hrastnik. This distinction matters when planning: Hrastnik is one section of a route that crosses several municipalities, not the entire route. The Pot SREČNO runs mostly through nature and includes preserved sites and exhibits of industrial heritage. Check route details before deciding on your hike.

For other hikes, Kopitnik in the municipality of Hrastnik is a starting point for routes to Gore, Kal, Turje, Rimske Toplice and Zidani Most. The annual Sovretov pohod offers a different kind of hike: it starts at Hrastnik railway station or at Dolanka Sports Hall in Dol pri Hrastniku and follows an easy route to Šavna Peč, the birthplace of Anton Sovre. At Hrastnik Trail on Kal planina, the running events start and finish; organised hikes are also offered. The formats differ in their starting points, destinations and event settings.

Events and activities

Hrastkov dan is an annual children’s and family festival in Hrastnik. The programme includes bouncy castles, creative workshops and presentations by local associations. Jamatlon is an underground obstacle event held twice a year, in June and December, in a mine between Hrastnik and Trbovlje. Rdeči revirji, meanwhile, is an international performing arts festival in Hrastnik, Trbovlje and Zagorje ob Savi. Street theatre, dance and circus bring the mining heritage to life.

Water-based activities are also among the options: Center vodnih športov offers tourists organised rafting trips on the Sava; check availability before your trip. In Hrastnik, the indoor 25-metre swimming pool is open in the afternoons for recreational swimming and other swimming activities. As dates and programmes for recurring events can change, and opening hours and offers can also vary, it is worth checking the latest information before making plans.

Regional cuisine

Two dishes also provide a culinary connection to the region. Funšterc, also called knapovsko sonce, is a dish from Zasavje. Krumpantoč, also known as Krumpatoč or Krumpentoč, is an old speciality of glassworkers that later spread to other parts of Zasavje. The two names point to different regional connections: Funšterc represents a dish of the region, while Krumpantoč links culinary tradition with the history of glassworkers.
