Hrastnik can be explored through a variety of interests: water activities on the Sava, hiking and climbing, or traces of cultural and industrial history. When planning your trip, it helps to keep the specific details of each activity in mind. For example, the 9.3-kilometre length given for the Pot SREČNO refers to the section within the municipality of Hrastnik, not the entire route. A special arrangement is also required for museum visits outside regular opening hours. The following topics will help you decide which side of Hrastnik you would like to discover during your stay.

Rafting and kayaking on the Sava

The water sports centre in Hrastnik offers organised rafting trips on the Sava, including easier and somewhat more challenging sections. The guides explain the route and provide the necessary equipment. If you are planning a trip, you can check the relevant conditions with the provider in advance.

The kayaking offer also includes a range of options: these include the “TOPO DUO” adventure with experienced kayakers, as well as rowing courses. This means you can choose from a named kayaking experience and courses in addition to rafting trips. For planning purposes, it is a good idea to confirm the relevant conditions and dates with the provider.

Hiking trails and climbing routes

The Pot SREČNO is a themed tourist hiking route connecting Laško, Hrastnik, Trbovlje and Zagorje ob Savi. Its section within the municipality of Hrastnik is 9.3 kilometres long. This figure refers to the Hrastnik section; it does not describe the length of the entire route. The Pot SREČNO is primarily intended for curious hikers, open-minded explorers and horse riders.

In October 2026, part of the Pot SREČNO between Hrastnik and Trbovlje can be hiked through a mine tunnel. Check the specific dates for your visit in advance. Kopitnik offers another hiking option, with trails leading from there to Gore and Kal. Those interested in climbing will find 44 routes at the Pod Škalo site. Since climbing infrastructure should be checked against current conditions, it is advisable to check before your visit.

Churches, houses and industrial history

The Church of Matere Božje in Hrastnik was originally built around 1550. Another historic link to the Sava is Rižnarjeva hiša: the house was built in the 18th century for boatmen and ferrymen who travelled along the river. It was formerly known as Peklarjeva gostilna. Together, these two buildings show different sides of local history; the story of Rižnarjeva hiša also includes its former use and the people who travelled on the Sava.

A Roman settlement dating from the 1st to the 4th century is also documented in Hrastnik. The former coal mine was of great importance to the region’s development: it supported rapid industrialisation and the establishment of several factories. This past offers a different perspective on Hrastnik from today’s water and hiking activities.

The Muzej Hrastnik is housed in a former German school building. Its collection includes “Lutke, lutkarji in Igračenje”. Visits outside regular opening hours are possible by prior telephone arrangement. Two rooms in Mlakarjevo stanovanje have been preserved with their contemporary objects and furnishings intact. On 31 March 2007, Mlakarjevo stanovanje was declared a local cultural monument.

A regional food connection

The Zasavje region also has its own culinary term: a dish from the region is called “knapovsko sonce”. It adds a regional culinary connection to the cultural and historical themes.
