Veľká Paka lies in the Podunajská nížina, in the central part of Žitný ostrov, on its old Quaternary core. The cadastral area is a deforested plain. Beneath young Tertiary clays and sands lies a thick layer of Danube deposits; in places, windblown sands emerge at the surface in the form of dunes. The character of the landscape can therefore be read on two levels: the plain and individual dunes shape the surface, while the clays, sands and Danube deposits describe the geological subsoil. Visitors who want to understand the landforms during their stay will find both a clear lowland setting and a specific connection between the earth’s surface and the geological subsoil here.

Church and Sacred Architectural History

The present-day Church of Saint Ladislaus was built in 1678 on older foundations and remodelled into its current form in 1936–1937. It is a single-nave building with a flat-ended presbytery. The original presbytery, now used as a side chapel, contains a neoclassical altar with an image of Saint Ladislaus from the second half of the 18th century. Several layers of history can therefore be distinguished in the church: older foundations, the 17th-century building, its present form resulting from the 20th-century remodelling, and an image from the 18th century. The rectory in Veľká Paka has an L-shaped floor plan and probably dates from the early 19th century. It provides another point of reference for sacred architecture, with a floor plan and approximate date that differ from the specific renovation phases of the church.

Historic Wayside Monuments and KÉP DOMB

The wayside shrine Božie muky between Čukárska Paka and Kvetoslavov is already marked on a military map from 1763. The stone wayside cross Prícestný kamenný kríž was erected in 1883 in honour of the parish priest József Pergő. It was restored in 2023 and blessed on 28 March 2024. KÉP DOMB is an archaeological burial mound dating from the Early Iron Age and the Kalenderberg culture, from the 8th to the 5th century BC. It was declared a National Cultural Monument in 2017. It is one of the few surviving prehistoric burial mounds above ground level in the lowland areas of Slovakia. The timeline thus extends from the prehistoric mound through the historical dates of the wayside shrine and cross to the restoration and blessing of the cross.

Marked Cycling Routes and Recreation

The marked Veľká Paka–Oľdza cycling route runs via Mierovo and is 7.3 kilometres long. The also-marked Holice–Oľdza route passes through Veľká Paka. The routes differ in the information given about their directions: the first names the distance and an intermediate village, while the second specifies that it passes through Veľká Paka. Check the local signs before setting off. A pond in Veľká Paka is used for recreation and cultural events. It therefore complements the architectural and cultural monuments with another point of interest for travel planning.
