You can plan a visit to Váhovce from two perspectives: the town’s sacred and commemorative history, or the landscape along the Váh and cycling routes in the municipality. If you are looking for a holiday apartment here, you can focus more on buildings and memorial sites, or on protected aquatic habitats and cycling.
Landscape and Nature Conservation
The Váh River is very close by and shapes the character and development of the landscape. Most of the municipality of Váhovce lies on the alluvial ridge along the right bank of the Váh. The waterworks Vodné dielo Kráľová, built along the lower reaches of the river, are located on this ridge. Elevations range from 118 to 124 m above sea level.
The territory of Váhovce is part of the Natura 2000 site and bird protection area SKCHVU010 Kráľová. Its aquatic habitats provide suitable conditions for the Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) to breed and survive. The regional ecological corridor NRBk1 Váh also extends into the cadastral area. The river landscape, protected habitats and a regional corridor thus offer distinct connections with nature.
Cycling and Getting Here
When travelling here, note that the R1 expressway runs north of Váhovce through the cadastral area, but does not provide a direct road connection to the town. Plan the final leg using an up-to-date route map.
Two cycling routes are listed for Váhovce, with a combined length of 11.9 km: the red Vážska cyklomagistrála 002, at 5.1 km, and the blue Okolo VN Kráľová 2207, at 6.8 km. These distances provide a specific reference when comparing route information for Váhovce.
A description published by the regional authority on 28 October 2017 and updated on 21 February 2022 also mentions a 4 km paved section along the top of the dam within the cadastral area. It forms part of a 17 km cycling route from Horný Čepeň via Sereď, Dolná Streda and Váhovce, continuing via Kaskády to Šaľa. Route and surface information may change; check the latest map and the condition of the surface before setting out.
Sacred Buildings and Local Remembrance
The late Baroque Church of St Nicholas the Bishop (Kostol sv. Mikuláša biskupa) was built in 1778 on the site of an older church first mentioned in 1669. It has a Neoclassical high altar with an image of St Nicholas, as well as Neoclassical side altars dedicated to the Holy Trinity and Christ on the Mount of Olives. A description from 2025 said that the church was in good condition and serving its religious purpose. If you are planning to visit the interior, please check current access arrangements.
The statue of St Florian was erected in 1827 in memory of a major fire in 1824. Historically, a procession went to the statue on 4 May, the feast day of St Florian; the day was observed as a vow of allegiance to the saint. The Heroes’ Monument (Pomník hrdinov) dates from the 20th century and commemorates those killed in the First and Second World Wars.
A Neoclassical stone wayside cross from 1793 adds to the local evidence of different historical periods. Together, the church, wayside cross and monuments offer different points of connection with Váhovce’s history: from the older church to the commemoration of a fire and the memorial sites of the 20th century.
