The Church of the Nativity of Mary in Zavar brings together several building phases: the Neo-Gothic church was built in 1907 on the site of an earlier Romanesque church; the current stained-glass windows date from around 1955. The earlier church, the construction of the present building, and the later window decoration thus represent different historical layers.

Location and Landscape

Zavar lies eight kilometres southeast of Trnava, at an elevation of 127 metres above sea level. In landscape terms, the village is situated on the eastern edge of the Trnava loess upland. The eastern part of the municipality is a separate area: it lies in the shared floodplain of the Blava and Dudváh rivers. The village location and the landscape of the municipal area are therefore two distinct geographical references.

Archaeological finds point to settlement in Zavar during the Neolithic, Eneolithic, and Early Bronze Age. The first written mention dates from 1255, when the village was referred to as “de Zovvor.” The timeline thus stretches from prehistoric settlement periods to a medieval written record.

Church and Building History

Architectural details can also be found inside the Church of the Nativity of Mary: its plaster vaults have a cross-ribbed design and a Gothicizing profile. “Gothicizing” here describes the profile’s stylistic features, while the church itself was built in the Neo-Gothic style in 1907. The tower is 32.40 metres high and houses three bells.

The church is also associated with a commemorative plaque for Zavar’s parish administrators. It was unveiled on 7 September 2008; the ceremony began with a festive Mass in the Church of the Nativity of Mary. Another local memorial is the bronze statue of Saint Barbara in the local cemetery. It was unveiled on 31 October 2010.

Another architectural landmark is Kaštieľ manor house. It was built in the early 19th century in the Classical style. Together with the Neo-Gothic church, the two buildings illustrate different stylistic influences in Zavar’s architectural history.

Crafts, Music and Local Events

The village’s cultural history also includes the making of embroidery and lace. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Zavar had a workshop and a school where these items were made for the Izabella association. Women in Zavar continued embroidering into the first third of the 20th century to supplement their income. These accounts highlight different aspects of the craft: organized production for an association and embroidery as a way to contribute to household income.

Gejza Dusík, who was from Zavar, was a pioneer and leading figure of the founding generation of Slovak popular music composers. Founded in 1996, the Zavarský Chamber Choir represented Zavar in churches in Trnava. The village’s cultural profile thus ranges from a prominent figure in music history to an ensemble that represented Zavar at performances outside the village.

Earlier events are also associated with specific years and programmes. At the Slivkové hody on 28 September 2008, visitors in Zavar could sample plum dumplings, Šúľance, Báleše, and other plum specialities. At Country hody 2017, children could ride horses and a camel, use a bouncy castle, and admire vintage cars. The Zavarská desiatka took place in Zavar in 2023 and 2024. These examples represent different aspects of past community events: plum dishes, a festival programme featuring animals and vintage cars, and a running event.
