Smolenice brings together a range of discoveries: Smolenický Castle, with its medieval history, the Molpír hillfort and trails through karst landscapes. When planning, it helps to consider the different types of visits and the times involved—from a self-guided educational trail to a cave tour.

Castle and archaeological history

Today’s Smolenický Castle was built in the early 20th century on the ruins of a castle dating from the mid-15th century. Count Jozef Pálffy began building the present-day castle on the remains of the old castle. During visits, only the lower courtyard is accessible. Check the current tour arrangements before your trip so you can plan around this limited access.

The Molpír hillfort offers a different perspective on the area’s history: the fortified settlement belongs to the Kalenderberg culture and covers twelve hectares. Its grounds are divided into three areas—two outer baileys and an acropolis. Sections of the fortifications, a gate, a cult object and a cistern have been restored and presented. Information boards along the educational trail explain the individual features and help visitors understand the different parts of the site.

The Múzeum Molpír is housed in the former rectory. Its exhibits range from finds from the Hallstatt-period hillfort to a section about Štefan Banič. Other subjects include historical books from the 17th to 19th centuries, local history, minerals, and the flora, fauna and ethnography of Smolenice and its surroundings. The Múzeum Molpír is closed for technical reasons until further notice; check whether it has reopened before visiting.

Educational trails and a cave visit

The Náučný chodník Smolenický kras runs from Jahodník via Jaskyňa Driny, Vlčiareň and Hlbočianska dolina to Vrtichov lom in Smolenice. The self-guided trail is 4.5 kilometres long, climbs 230 metres and has eight stops. It is described as an easy hiking trail that can be walked year-round; maintenance and trail conditions are still relevant when planning.

Jaskyňa Driny is the only publicly accessible cave in western Slovakia. It is located in the Smolenický Karst in the Little Carpathians, southwest of Smolenice and close to the Jahodník recreation centre. From the car park, access is via a forest path of about one kilometre, with an elevation gain of 100 metres and a walking time of around 20 minutes. The cave tour route is 450 metres long and takes about 35 minutes. For comparison, the entire Náučný chodník Smolenický kras educational trail is listed as taking around 1.5 hours to walk. These different times help you compare a cave visit with a hike as separate options for how to spend your time.

Hlboče Valley is a canyon-like valley west of Smolenice. Its described landscape features include exposed rocks, karst formations, large potholes and a waterfall that flows intermittently. A blue-marked hiking trail leads into the valley; the waterfall is at its end. Hlboče Valley was designated a nature reserve covering 123 hectares in 1981 and has been a national nature reserve with the highest level of protection since 1995.

The summit area of the Little Carpathians offers another distinct attraction: a protected area has been designated there since 1994. It includes Záruby, the highest mountain in the range at 768 metres, as well as Čelo, Ostrý Kameň and Veterlín.

Mead and an introduction to beekeeping

The Včelovina visitor complex is located below Smolenický Castle. A guided tour of mead production includes a tasting of three meads. A guided tasting of nine varieties of mead is also available. If you are interested in the production tour, check booking options in advance, as arrangements may change.

Schoolchildren can take part in interactive tours about different types of flowers, the work of beekeepers and life in a beehive. Advance booking may be required for these school programmes. The offers differ in their audiences and focus: the tastings centre on mead, while the school tours introduce plants and beekeeping.

When looking for a hotel in Smolenice, you can first decide whether the castle and local history, archaeological finds, the cave or hiking trails will shape your stay. The stated walking and visiting times offer practical guidance; for the castle, cave and museum, it is advisable to check the current visiting conditions.
