Moravský Svätý Ján combines a distinctive cultural heritage with cycling and nature along the March. Habánsky dvor offers a glimpse into the history of the Hutterites from Moravia; churches, a chapel and a historic manor house add to the picture of the area’s architectural history. There is also a nature reserve and two cycling routes with different focuses. The annual Habán-Hody in September, along with the themes of culture and cycling, can help guide your choice of destination.

Habánsky dvor and Hutterite history

The Hutterites’ arrival from Moravia in Moravský Svätý Ján dates back to 1540–1550. Habánsky dvor has the layout of a square courtyard with three entrances and a small chapel in the centre. Its structure is defined by both the courtyard’s clear shape and the chapel’s central position. The years 1839 and 1994 are inscribed on the front of the chapel tower.

Traditional Habán-Hody celebrations are held every year in September on the grounds of Habánsky dvor. If you are planning to travel for the festival, check the specific event dates in advance. Its fixed place in the calendar makes the Hody a seasonal reference point for travel planning.

Sacred buildings and the manor house

The Roman Catholic Classical Church of St John the Baptist was built from 1840 to 1851 on the site of an older Baroque church. The Salaš district is also home to the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, an octagonal building. These two sacred buildings offer a different perspective on the area’s history from Habánsky dvor: here, the focus is on architectural form and the chronology of the buildings.

The manor house originally dates back to a Baroque building from the mid-18th century. It is a three-storey rectangular building with an Art Nouveau façade. The contrast between its Baroque origins and Art Nouveau façade gives the building a distinctive architectural character. The local cultural scene also includes KC JÁNY, a cultural and community centre housed beneath the cultural centre, with a library, gallery and spaces for community activities.

Nature along the March and cycling routes

The Čeker–Čertová studňa National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Moravský Svätý Ján. It protects natural communities in an oxbow lake of the March, as well as riverbank vegetation. The March is also a reference point for EuroVelo 13: the Slovak section is 90 kilometres long, starts in Bratislava at the Austrian border, follows the border with the Czech Republic and ends in Moravský Svätý Ján.

There are virtually no uphill stretches on the section leading to Moravský Svätý Ján. It runs along asphalt roads of varying quality, usually with little or no car traffic. The route stays close to the March’s wildlife and plant life; the river is considered a paradise for waterbirds. If you plan to cycle this route, check local route conditions in advance.

The Náučný chodník Nivou Moravy Devín–Moravský Svätý Ján educational trail also ends in the village. It is a self-guided, linear, year-round cycling trail that can be followed in both directions and focuses on nature, cultural history and nature conservation. While EuroVelo 13 focuses on its longer route and road conditions, the educational trail is organised around specific themes. The two routes therefore offer distinct ways to explore the region’s cycling and nature attractions.

Connection to Hohenau

A permanent bridge over the March connects Moravský Svätý Ján with Hohenau. It replaced a pontoon bridge that had been there since 1994 in 2005. If you plan to include the connection to Hohenau in your trip, check the bridge conditions before setting out.

When looking for a holiday apartment, your reason for travelling can help you decide what to focus on: the Habán-Hody are tied to September, while the two cycling routes offer different route and thematic profiles. Churches, chapels and Habánsky dvor add the area’s architectural history to the mix.
