Tekolďany lies in the upper reaches of the Tekoldiansky potok, in the western part of the loess-covered Nitrianska pahorkatina. The municipality combines a striking landscape setting with a long historical background. Two dates help put it in context: settlement began in the Neolithic period, and the first written mention followed in 1310. Thus, early settlement history and written local history stand side by side as distinct points of reference in time.
Local history before and after 1310
The Neolithic settlement belonged to the Želiezovce culture. The first written mention is not a founding date, but marks an early written reference to the municipality. Historical forms of the name include Tekulchen, Tukulchen, Tökőld, Tekolgyan, Tekolgyany and Tekolďany. These forms extend the local history beyond a single date: they show how the name appears in different historical forms. Together, early settlement, the first written record and the name variants offer three distinct perspectives on Tekolďany’s past.
Church and sacred art
The Roman Catholic Church of Panny Márie Ružencovej has a single nave and a polygonal presbytery. Its asymmetrical tower is attached to the side façade of the nave. A single-nave layout focuses the building on one main nave; the presbytery is the chancel area, and “polygonal” describes its many-sided shape. The church contains two former altarpieces by the painter J. Zanussi, who came from Trnava. One is signed and dated 1804. This painting provides a distinct art-historical point of interest alongside the building’s architectural form. The sacred heritage also includes the 1945 neoclassical bell tower structure, Zvonica.
Hilly countryside, walks and night skies
The municipal area is unforested; young Tertiary sediments lie beneath a loess cover. The Tekoldiansky potok and the surrounding hilly countryside shape a picturesque landscape suited to walking. Tekolďany belongs to the Poniklec microregion. The 10.3 km Náučný chodník mikroregiónu Poniklec educational trail is located in the Poniklec microregion and is easy, self-guided and open year-round. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Low light pollution also makes the area suitable for observing the night sky. Walks in the hills and stargazing offer different experiences: exploring the landscape on foot by day and looking up at the night sky.
Events and planning
Events organized by the municipality include Deň matiek (Mother’s Day), MDD (Slovak Children’s Day), a Gulášový turnaj (goulash tournament) and a Mikuláš celebration in honour of Saint Nicholas. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the date in advance.
In March 2025, the municipality presented a newly renovated gym and invited people to exercise there. If you would like to include the gym in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently available for use and under what conditions.
