The historical highlights of Zemianske Sady range from the bell tower with a cross to settlement remains from the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. Wine is also part of the village’s history: wines produced here were once exported and were popular in Prague. The landscape, buildings and archaeological finds reveal different sides of the village; wine tasting adds another dimension as part of the local tradition of events.

Landscape and geographical setting

The municipality of Zemianske Sady lies within the Váh River basin. The Jarčie stream crosses the area, carrying less water as it flows. Zemianske Sady also lies in the Nitrianska pahorkatina and Zalužianska pahorkatina; these landscape areas are classified as part of the Podunajska nížina and the subregions of the Podunajska pahorkatina. The stream and the hills provide concrete geographical reference points and complement the cultural and historical themes with a landscape perspective.

Buildings and local history

The bell tower with a cross is considered a prominent cultural monument of Zemianske Sady. It stands on the main road near the municipal office. The Zemianska kúria has a different historical role: the Thúry family built it in the 18th century, and it served as the seat of the large estate. The two buildings therefore have different points of significance: the bell tower stands out as a cultural monument, while the kúria is notable for when it was built and its former function.

The Jewish cemetery is also part of the cultural heritage. It contains around 70 relatively well-preserved gravestones. Another named religious landmark, the branch church of Panny Márie Ružencovej (2000), is part of the village’s history.

Archaeological traces and different layers of history

A settlement from the Early Iron Age has been identified at the Bezenica archaeological site in Zemianske Sady. The excavated settlement structures there belong to the so-called pit houses. Zemianske Sady is also known to have been densely settled in the Late Bronze Age, with settlement at this site continuing for several centuries. These finds offer a different way to explore the village’s history than its buildings and gravestones: they point to early settlement phases and to the different periods that have shaped the village’s past.

Wine tradition and a reason to visit

The history of wine connects Zemianske Sady with an earlier trade route: wines produced here were exported and were also popular in Prague. Wine tasting is a separate matter, and is one of the events that have become a tradition in Zemianske Sady. If you would like to plan your trip around a tasting, check the event dates in advance. This allows you to distinguish the historical perspective on wine production from a specific event you can attend.

A cross outside the village also has a particular purpose: the cross behind the Žľabina locality, in the direction of Šintavský háj, was restored in 2020. It was intended as a place for quiet moments of prayer and remembrance during walks. Together, the history of the buildings, early settlement finds, landscape and wine tradition make Zemianske Sady a distinctive destination for travellers with an interest in cultural history.
