Veľký Grob brings together a multifaceted cultural history and a range of natural attractions. A nature trail circles the Rašelinisko pond, while embroidery and historic churches reflect the cultural character of the village. If you are planning a stay, you can explore Veľký Grob according to your specific interests: architectural history, textile heritage or landscape.
Landscape and Nature Trails
Geographically, Veľký Grob lies on the boundary between the northern foothills of the Danubian Lowland and the southernmost part of the Trnava Hills. The Uľanská mokraď wetland lies east of the village, in the Danubian Lowland. The cadastral area of Veľký Grob also contains four peat bogs, which offer opportunities for fishing.
The Náučný chodník okolo „Rašeliny“ nature trail follows an approximately three-kilometre route around the Rašelinisko pond. Four educational panels and an information board introduce key representatives of the nearby fauna and flora, including mammals, fish and birds. The trail starts at the „Pod vŕbami“ recreation area, where there are seating areas, a place to grill food and shelter from strong sun.
Another nature trail is devoted to the history of Veľký Grob. It runs through the built-up area of the village and includes eight information panels. The two trails have different focuses: one highlights local history, while the other explores the flora and fauna around Rašelinisko.
Churches and Architectural History
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anne was built in 1771 by expanding an earlier Baroque chapel. The church houses an organ from the workshop of Valentín Arnold, an organ builder from Trnava; it dates from around 1800.
The Evangelical church was built in 1788 as a Toleration church. In 1936, it was demolished and rebuilt to a design by the architect M. M. Harminc. The Baroque-Classical tower from the late 18th century was preserved. Its construction history is therefore markedly different from that of St Anne’s Church, which developed from an older chapel.
The Pálfiovský kaštieľ is also part of the village’s architectural history. It was probably built in the second half of the 17th century as the seat of an economic district of a feudal estate and as the residence of the estate administrator. Its tentative dating and original function offer another perspective on the history of estate administration.
Embroidery and Local Cultural Heritage
Before the First World War, Veľký Grob was a renowned centre of embroidery. Embroidery, the distinctive Veľký Grob folk costume, painted rooms and hallways, and the architecture of old houses combine Slovak, Haban, Croatian and Hungarian cultural influences with a distinct local character. The cultural element “Ornament from Čataj and Veľký Grob” was inscribed in 2019.
The embroidery designs of Čataj and Veľký Grob were also adapted for textile painting and decorate the altar cloths of the Evangelical church. Pätoprstá Mária was one of the notable embroiderers and pattern designers in the Veľký Grob area. She mastered traditional pre-drawn embroidery, including its patterns and variations for parts of the women’s folk costume in Veľký Grob. Both the design of the patterns and their use in textiles are therefore part of local cultural history.
Markets and Village Days
Farmers’ markets were held in several editions at the local market square in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Producers and growers from Veľký Grob and the surrounding region, as well as a food stall, were announced for the 2024 edition. If you would like to include a market visit in your travel plans, check the dates locally in advance.
The Grobská sedliacka olympiáda was part of the Village Days in 2022 and 2023: it was held for the second time in 2022 and the third time in 2023. At the 2022 edition, several events put the participants’ agricultural skills to the test. If you are planning around a future event, check locally for dates before arranging your trip.
