Veľké Úľany combines religious architectural history with rural architecture and lakeside recreation. The municipality is located in the Podunajská nížina between the Čierna Voda and the Malý Dunaj. The Čierna Voda flows through the northern part of the municipality. The historic buildings reveal different eras, while Lotos Lake adds a distinctive touch with its lake and recreational facilities.
Malá Kalvária and Historic Buildings
Malá Kalvária was built in 1740, and its chapel, Sedem bolestnej Panny Márie, in 1756. The complex includes a pear-shaped atrium, statues of Panny Márie and sv. Jána evanjelistu dating from 1759, a stone cross from 1775, and Stations of the Cross chapels. It is listed as a cultural monument under number 2522 in the Central List of National Cultural Monuments of the Slovak Republic. The different structures and dates give the site a distinctive historical depth.
In the centre of Veľké Úľany stands the Kúria, a Neoclassical building erected in 1828 by Mikuláš Lacsný. It is single-storey and has an L-shaped floor plan. An open arcade runs through the courtyard area of the side wing. The Kúria thus offers an architectural contrast to the town’s religious buildings.
The Roman Catholic Kostol sv. Michala archanjela was begun in 1594 in the Renaissance style and, according to the records, completed in 1670. Its tower was built in 1718; after 1756, the church was extended with side aisles. The Protestant church has a different building history: in 1958, it was converted from an agricultural building belonging to the Pálffyho majera. The initiative came from Slovak immigrants, mainly from Dolná zem.
The Dom ľudového bývania
The Dom ľudového bývania was built in 1910 and opened on 1 July 1991 after renovation. Its exhibition was opened to the public in 1992. Its architectural features include a thatched roof, a courtyard, a well with a lifting device, and an enclosure dating from the mid-19th century. A comparison with the Kúria reveals different forms of local architectural history: here, a rural-style house with a courtyard; there, a Neoclassical building with an arcade.
Landscape, Lake and Cycling
Lotos Lake is a 3.5-hectare recreational area for families, with a 1.1-hectare lake. The lake is home to eight fish species, including carp, crucian carp, grass carp, pike and catfish. Fishing is also available. Other recreational activities include a mini zoo, a children’s playground and horse riding; availability of these activities may change.
A new cycling route runs away from the main road and is 4.89 km long in total. Of this, 2.299 km runs along the protective embankment of the Čierna Voda. Veľké Úľany therefore offers a range of themes to plan around: architectural history, rural architecture, lakeside activities and a cycling route with a published length.
