Trstice lies in the central part of the Danubian Lowland. The Little Danube runs along the western side of the town, while the Čierna Voda runs along its northern and eastern sides. This offers two different perspectives when choosing a destination for your stay: the town’s architectural and commemorative history, and the rivers and wetland associated with Trstice. Churches, monuments and statues provide tangible points of connection to local cultural history; the waterscape offers a second thematic dimension. This allows you to decide whether you want to focus mainly on local history or also include river and nature themes in your trip.

Church and Architectural History

The Roman Catholic church was built in 1903–1904, replacing a church dating from 1717. The two dates mark different building phases and show that today’s church building was preceded by an older place of worship. The church has an organ dating from 1904, made by the Riegler brothers’ workshop in Budapest. Its year of origin therefore falls within the construction period of today’s church; the church from 1717 points to an earlier period. Anyone interested in religious architecture can consider the building’s history and the organ as two specific aspects of the site: the evolution of the church building and the origins of a particular instrument. The church park also contains a chapel of the Virgin Mary, which was dedicated in May 2003. It adds a distinctly later point in time alongside the older building phases.

Monuments and Statues

The Heroes’ Monument commemorates the heroes of the 1848 uprising as well as the soldiers who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It thus brings together memories of different historical events. The Holy Trinity Monument dates from 1825 and was reconstructed in 1925. Exactly a century lies between its creation and reconstruction—a useful point of comparison with the other dated buildings and statues in Trstice. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is considered the oldest statue in the town and dates from the mid-18th century. The commemorative landmarks therefore span a period from the mid-18th century to a reconstruction in the 20th century, while differing in their themes and functions.

A statue of Saint Vendelin, the patron saint of shepherds, stands on the outskirts of Trstice. It is made of sandstone and was probably erected in the 19th century, so its date is approximate. The statue of Saint Elizabeth was originally erected in 1924 and is currently located in front of Trstice’s Health and Social Centre. Its location may change if it is moved. If you are planning your visit specifically around this site, check its current location before you go.

Rivers, Wetland and Cultural Activities

The Čierna Voda wetland is a wetland of national importance associated with Trstice and Dolný Chotár. The Little Danube offers a different water-related experience: in the vicinity of Trstice, water tourists use it for rafting. These are two distinct points of interest for nature-focused travellers—a wetland associated with two municipalities and an activity in the surrounding area. If you are considering rafting, check locally for starting points and access rules.

Another cultural attraction is the Malom Mozi cinema at the Cultural Centre, 472, in Trstice. Its programme and operating arrangements may change. If a cinema visit is important to your stay, check the current programme in advance.

The historical dates provide specific points of reference; for the nature-related attractions, it is worth bearing in mind the location associated with each one.
