Sereď brings together a variety of attractions: the main exhibition on Šintava Castle, a town museum with several permanent exhibitions, a Holocaust museum and a cycling route along the Váh embankment. There are also historic buildings and a market held regularly in June. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether cultural history, remembrance, cycling or an event date should shape your stay.
Town Museum and Holocaust Museum
The Sereď Town Museum is housed in the former Roman Catholic parish building, now known as Fándlyho fara. It has six permanent exhibitions; the exhibition on Šintava Water Castle is the main one. It displays archaeological finds from the courtyard of Sereď Castle: pottery, tiles, valuable glass, weapons, smaller objects and coins from excavations conducted between 1984 and 1992. The finds give the exhibition a specific archaeological focus, while the history of the building and fortifications explores other aspects of the town’s past.
The town museum also offers the tactile exhibition “A Dialogue of Discovery Through Touch” for blind and visually impaired visitors. It uses modern technology, including a 3D model and audio commentary in Slovak and English. Alongside its historical themes, the museum therefore includes an exhibition specifically designed to communicate through touch and audio.
The Holocaust Museum in Sereď preserves the memory of the events of the Holocaust that affected Slovak Jews and serves to educate the general public. Its educational work takes place in the authentic rooms of the former labour camp, which later became a concentration camp. The museum offers a tour or explanation in sign language. Remembrance and education are integral to the site’s purpose.
Traces of Šintava Castle and other historic buildings
The history of Šintava Castle is reflected in a variety of architectural traces. Sereď Castle and Park preserve a surviving remnant of the castle, created by connecting and altering parts of the former water castle. A protected park area in the cadastral territory of Sereď follows the outline of the castle’s former outer Renaissance fortifications. The town museum exhibition and the park area offer different perspectives: archaeological finds from the castle courtyard in one, and the course of a former fortification in the other.
Individual buildings add to the picture. The bastion of Šintava Fortress contains so-called casemates, with two pairs of gun embrasures, a large vaulted room and three pillars. The structure was built of brick in the mid-16th century, around 1550. The Jewish mikveh in Sereď dates from 1904–1905. The Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1781 in the Baroque-classical style and is one of the town’s sights. These examples bring together different periods and architectural styles, without requiring a single set itinerary.
Market, cycling route and getting there
The Seredský Hodový Jarmok is held regularly in the last third of June, traditionally around St John’s Day. Since 2022, its programme has also included historical and craft events; concerts in the town amphitheatre have been part of it since 2015. If the market is important to your travel plans, check the exact event dates. This lets you time your visit to coincide with the recurring event.
For a different focus, consider the cycling route along the Váh embankment: it connects the northern and southern parts of the cadastral territory of Sereď and forms part of the Vážska cyklo-magistrála. This makes it quite different from a stay focused mainly on museums and historic buildings. Sereď can be reached via a motorway connection to Bratislava, Nitra and Trnava, as well as by train.
Choose accommodation based on your reason for travelling
When looking for a hotel in Sereď, you can start by choosing your travel dates and deciding what you want to focus on. Around the time of the Jarmok, the event dates are an important planning consideration; for a stay focused on culture and history, the exhibitions and historic buildings take centre stage. The cycling route along the Váh embankment offers another option.
