At the Veľké Uherce Reservoir, nature and route planning come together: it is an important spawning site for the common toad (Bufo bufo), and the MTB route 8336 leads to it and crosses the green hiking trail 5412 there. Veľké Uherce thus offers different points of interest for a trip, from protected landscapes to marked trails and historic places.
Nature and Landscape
The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area covers two thirds of the cadastral area of Veľké Uherce. The Dobrolínske skaly Nature Reserve is also within its cadastral area. Protected plant species and forest, forest-steppe, steppe and rocky steppe habitats can be found there. These details give the local nature theme a specific ecological dimension.
Other notable natural features include the 27-metre-long Dobrolínska Cave and Oselná skala. This viewpoint offers an almost panoramic view over a large part of the Horná Nitra region. The protected Veľkouherská Linden stands beside the local Roman Catholic church and is more than 200 years old.
Hiking and Cycling
Hiking route 5412 connects the reservoir with the municipal office of Veľké Uherce and is 16.5 kilometres long. For mountain bikers, the yellow-marked route 8336 is a separate option: it is 25.6 kilometres long and classified as a moderately difficult sports route. It leads to the reservoir, where it crosses the green route 5412. The hiking route and MTB trail can therefore be distinguished by their length, markings and connection to the reservoir.
The Ponitrím educational trail and the Veľkouherský Circuit also have clear route details: Ponitrím is 17 kilometres long and starts at the municipal office; the green-marked Veľkouherský Circuit is 18 kilometres long. The two routes are close in length, differing by one kilometre, while their starting point and route name each provide their own orientation. Check the local signs for the Ponitrím educational trail before setting out. Details of the Veľkouherský Circuit may change.
History and Special Places
The Church of St Michael the Archangel (Kostol sv. Michala archanjela) reflects several construction phases. It was originally built in 1332 in the Gothic style on older foundations. In 1669, it was remodelled in the Renaissance style, and a side chapel was added. The protected Veľkouherská Linden beside the local Roman Catholic church adds a natural monument with a history of its own, spanning more than 200 years, to this historical setting.
Brezová is a now-abandoned German settlement. Overgrown ruins remain of its 40 family homes; a wooden cross and century-old fruit trees mark the site. Hradisko represents a different historical period: it was a prehistoric hilltop settlement within the cadastral areas of Veľké Uherce and Malé Uherce. Together, these places offer different perspectives on history, from an abandoned settlement to prehistoric habitation.
Other Travel Interests
Veľké Uherce is also home to the MX Vinohrad motocross track. It was completely rebuilt in 2018 and meets the criteria of FIM regulations. Swimming was possible at the reservoir; if you plan to swim, check current bathing conditions before your visit.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Veľké Uherce, you can use your main travel interests as a guide: hiking and cycling offer different routes and markings, while protected areas, a viewpoint and historic places appeal to other interests. This lets you plan your trip around the themes you most want to explore.
