In Malé Uherce, baroque buildings, a monument to the Partisan Oath and routes through a varied landscape come together. When deciding whether to visit, it is worth considering two distinct aspects of the place: its identifiable cultural monuments and the opportunities for cycling or walking. Its location at the transition between a basin, mountains and the Nitra floodplain gives these attractions a clear geographical setting.

Between the Nitra Floodplain and the Tribeč Mountains

Malé Uherce lies where the southwestern foothills of the Hornonitrianska kotlina basin meet the Tribeč Mountains. The village is also situated in the Nitra floodplain, on the alluvial fan of a left-bank tributary. The basin’s edge, the mountains and the river landscape give the location distinct geographical features; you can take these into account alongside the cultural attractions when choosing your destination.

Part of the CHKO Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area lies at the southern end of Malé Uherce’s cadastral territory. It protects forest complexes with diverse morphological and topographical features, as well as remnants of thermophilic flora. The municipality’s natural character is therefore shaped by both its protected forests and its distinctive landforms and plant communities.

Baroque Buildings and a Memorial Site

A baroque manor house dating from the 18th century stands almost in the centre of the village. The former granary is the only surviving agricultural building in the manor complex in Malé Uherce. Both buildings belong to this historical complex, but represent different functions: the manor house is its central building, while the granary is its only surviving agricultural structure.

The Chapel of St Anne (Kostol (Kaplnka) sv. Anny) is a baroque religious building erected in 1719. Pomník prísahy (Monument to the Oath) provides a different historical connection: the memorial site includes a monument dedicated to the Partisan Oath. This monument is listed as a national cultural monument in Malé Uherce.

Visitors interested in architecture can also distinguish between the two baroque buildings by their dates: the manor house dates from the 18th century, while the chapel has the specific construction date of 1719. Pomník prísahy adds a dedication to the Partisan Oath to this focus. Together, they offer different cultural points of interest rather than simply a series of similar buildings.

Getting Here and Routes

When planning your journey, do not treat road and rail access as interchangeable. Malé Uherce is connected to the national transport network by road I/64 on the Nitra–Nováky route. Railway line 391 between Nové Zámky and Prievidza also passes through the municipality, but Malé Uherce has no railway station. So the fact that the railway line passes through the area does not mean you can board a train in the village; bear this distinction in mind when planning your journey.

There are two specific reference points for planning a cycling trip. Within Malé Uherce, the red route passes Kostol svätej Anny and Kostol svätého Tomáša before reaching the Malé Uherce signpost. The Partizánske cycle route leads to Malé Uherce from a junction with a cycling signpost along the red-marked route. One description concerns the route within the village, while the other describes the route to Malé Uherce. Check the markings on site before relying on them.

The forest above Malé Uherce at Štále is used for walks. Alongside the cycling routes, walks in a forest area are therefore another option for a nature-focused stay. If you plan to go there, it is advisable to check local conditions before setting out.

Cultural Events and Travel Planning

Dni obce – Malouherčania zabavme sa spolu (Village Days – Malouherčania, let’s have fun together) is one of the cultural events regularly held in Malé Uherce. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the latest dates in the municipal calendar. The village offers different points of interest when choosing a destination: baroque architecture and a memorial site on the one hand, and cycling routes, walks and protected landscapes on the other.
