Anyone wishing to explore both the landscape and local history in Kolačno will find a place in a distinctive transitional setting. Kolačno lies in the northern part of the Tribeč Mountains, where the mountains give way to the Hornonitrianska kotlina basin. This brings two clearly distinct focal points together: a protected landscape with forests and wetlands, and historic sites and a municipal museum. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether nature, local history or both will be a priority on your trip.

Landscape between the mountains and the basin

The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area includes part of the municipality of Kolačno, where protection level II applies. It protects well-preserved forest complexes on the Veľký Vracov and Michalov vrch mountains, as well as distinctive morphological and relief features and remnants of thermophilic flora. The wooded areas of Kolačno include hornbeam, oak, oak-beech and high-quality coniferous forests. Different forest types are therefore part of the area’s natural appeal, alongside its protected landscapes.

Two locally designated wetlands have specific names and areas: “Rybník s lužným lesom pri Kolačne” covers 70,000 square metres, while Mišove jarky covers 53,000 square metres. These figures also distinguish the two areas by size. If wetlands are of particular interest to you, you can keep both names in mind when planning your trip.

Local history and the municipal museum

The first written reference to Kolačno dates to 1 June 1293, when the place was called “terra Kolechna”. The interpretation of the name also points to earlier settlement patterns: Kolačno is associated with the medieval dialect word “kolešňa”. It referred to a place away from the parent settlement, with temporary haystacks and animal enclosures.

Among the historic buildings is the reconstructed Roman Catholic Church of Saint Joseph the Worker, a landmark of Kolačno. The consecration of the first chapel on 19 March 1912 marks another date in the village’s history. In Ondrášová, a district of Kolačno, there is also a monument to those who fell in the Slovak National Uprising, erected in 1973.

The municipal museum displays a living room from the 1920s, a historic fire engine, tools for growing and processing flax, and wedding clothes. Visits are possible by prior arrangement, so please agree on a time in advance. The exhibits give the museum a focus on everyday life in the past, while the church, the chapel’s consecration and the monument illustrate different aspects of local remembrance.

Nature and leisure options

The green cycling route 5105 leads to Vrchhora Saddle. The ruins of the Church of St Michael (Kostol sv. Michala) and the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk (Kaplnka sv. Jána Nepomúckeho) are located there. A viewpoint can be reached from Vrchhora in about 15 minutes on foot. This approximate walking time offers a practical guide for the detour without converting it into a longer hiking time.

Kolačno’s multipurpose sports court with artificial turf is available for recreational sports. Activities listed include tennis, volleyball, mini football, basketball, streetball, nohejbal and badminton, as well as similar sports. Visitors can therefore choose between sporting activities and historical and landscape-related attractions in the village.

The Kolačno Cynology Club regularly hosts a German Shepherd competition for the Pohár SNP. The event was held for the 21st time in 2018. This is a specific historical reference point for the competition, without implying that it takes place every year.

Planning your journey and stay

Road III/51101 runs through Veľké Uherce, Kolačno and Ondrášová, connecting the places to the wider regional and local transport network. Check current road conditions before setting out. A bus route to Michalov Castle runs from Partizánske via Veľké Uherce and Kolačno to its terminus in Ondrášová; the castle can be reached from there. Check the current timetable before travelling.

A simple comparison can help you choose what to focus on: the protected landscape and wetlands offer a connection with nature, while the museum, church and monument bring local history to life. Vrchhora adds a cycling route, ruins, a chapel and a viewpoint to the range of options. You can therefore tailor your trip to Kolačno to the themes that interest you most.
