In Bošany, buildings from different centuries meet cycling routes that pass through several towns. The Church of St Martin the Bishop was completed in 1776 in the late Baroque style; its original church is first mentioned as early as 1332. The two castles also reward a closer look at their differences: they have distinct building histories and their own planning considerations.
Church and Chapels in Bošany
The Church of St Martin the Bishop is a single-nave building with an integrated tower. The church includes an altarpiece of St Martin dating from 1776. The dates mark different milestones: 1332 is the first mention of the original church, while 1776 is the year the late Baroque building was completed and the altarpiece was created.
The religious history also includes two chapels. The Upper Chapel was built in 1725 at the suggestion of Mikuláš Bošáni; services are held there during Marian feast days. The Red Chapel contains an image of the Virgin Mary, a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and a cross. In the past, it was used on procession days and days of prayer for the harvest. This former use should be distinguished from the services held in the Upper Chapel during Marian feast days.
Two Castles, Different Conditions
The old Renaissance castle of the Bossányiovci family is located right in the centre of Bošany. Its defences included polygonal bastions and a surrounding moat. As of 20 March 2025, a comprehensive reconstruction was under way for its intended use as a conference centre. Check current access arrangements before planning an interior visit.
The Baroque-Classical castle was built in 1776 by Ignác Bošáni and his wife Terézia. It has authentically preserved façades and a well-preserved interior. As of 20 March 2025, it was privately owned and used for cultural and social purposes; ownership and use may change. This describes a different use situation from the reconstruction of the Renaissance castle.
A new park with a pond was created on the site of the former park next to the Baroque-Classical castle. A Baroque statue of St Florian stands in front of the Renaissance castle in the centre. The statue of St John of Nepomuk still stands in front of the municipal office; it was restored in 2001. In addition to the major buildings, you will encounter individual religious monuments in the townscape.
Fair and Cycling Routes
The Bošiansky jarmok is one of the regular events held in Bošany. If the fair is relevant to your trip, check the dates for your travel period. This lets you plan your stay around the event rather than assuming a fixed date.
Two different route sequences are described for cycling excursions. One cycling route goes from Partizánske through Bošany, Chynorany and Žabokreky nad Nitrou and is suitable for various types of bicycle. Another route runs from Partizánske through Brodzany, Krásno, Nedanovce, Bošany, Chynorany and Žabokreky nad Nitrou, then back to Partizánske. The named intermediate towns provide a concrete basis for comparing routes: the second sequence also includes Brodzany, Krásno and Nedanovce. You do not need a distance figure to choose the route sequence that suits you best.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the history of the churches and castles, or a cycling route that includes Bošany as a stop. If you plan to visit the interior of the Renaissance castle, check current access arrangements; for the fair, the dates are what matter.
