Bzince pod Javorinou can be explored through several themes: the birthplace of the writer Ľudmila Podjavorinská, historical traces in Hrušové and protected areas of the White Carpathians. A marked hiking route from Cetuna adds a practical outdoor option to the cultural sites. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether the memorial, regional history or nature should be the main focus.

Memorial and Cultural History

The Pamätná izba Ľudmily Podjavorinskej is located in the writer’s birthplace in the center of Bzince pod Javorinou. Visits are possible year-round by arrangement by telephone or email, so please arrange your visit this way. The exhibition is devoted primarily to Ľudmila Podjavorinská and features photographs, tapestries, books and puppet figures. This gives you an insight into her work through a range of exhibits.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Michael the Archangel is mentioned as early as the papal tithe records of 1332–1337. In Hrušové, the bell tower is a national cultural monument. It features a unique 24-hour clock face, installed in the 1990s. Archaeological investigations at the old cemetery in Hrušové offer another glimpse into the history of the buildings: they uncovered the walls of a single-nave Gothic church. Its dating to the 14th century is provisional; the find is considered evidence of medieval settlement in the podjavoriná region.

Protected Areas and Habitats

The northern part of the cadastral area of Bzince pod Javorinou lies within the Biele Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. The Veľká Javorina Nature Reserve extends across Lubina and Bzince pod Javorinou. Covering 82.98 hectares, it protects natural maple-beech forests at the highest elevations of this part of the White Carpathians.

The 0.28-hectare Cetuna fen lies near the settlement of Cetuna, above Bzince pod Javorinou. It protects the region’s largest population of Gymnadenia densiflora. The European protected area SKUEV0367 Holubyho kopanice is also located in the northern part of the cadastral area. It has regularly mown meadows and wetlands with stable orchid populations. The protected areas mentioned differ considerably in size: the Veľká Javorina Nature Reserve covers 82.98 hectares, compared with 0.28 hectares for the Cetuna fen. The features they protect also range from maple-beech forests to a distinctive orchid population.

Hiking from Cetuna

A marked hiking route starts in Cetuna, a district of Bzince pod Javorinou, and follows the blue-marked E8 long-distance trail to Veľká Javorina and back. The route is listed as 12 kilometers long, with 590 meters of ascent and 590 meters of descent; it is classified as moderate. This makes it possible to assess the hike by distance, elevation gain and difficulty, and compare it with a focus on cultural history.

These options offer clearly different focuses for your trip: a visit to the memorial must be arranged in advance, while the hiking route can be weighed up by distance, elevation gain and its moderate rating. First consider whether an arranged visit or the hike should be the central activity of your trip.
