A steep, 60-metre-high rock near the Váh River is the site of Beckov Castle ruins. The castle became a ruin after a fire in 1728; its location connects the history of the structure with a striking part of the landscape.

Castles and Architectural History

Tematín Castle is also now a romantic ruin, visible from afar. It lies on a ridge of the Považský Inovec and once served as an important signal castle. In good visibility, the view from here reaches across the Považský Inovec, the Podunajská nížina, the Little Carpathians, the Myjavská pahorkatina and the White Carpathians. Visibility depends on the weather.

Two marked approaches with different walking times provide guidance for the route to the castle: a blue-marked trail from the recreation area below Bezovec takes about 1 hour 30 minutes uphill, while the blue-marked trail from Lúka takes approximately 2 hours 15 minutes. The stated difference in time is around 45 minutes. Both times are estimates; route conditions may vary.

In Nové Mesto nad Váhom, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary offers a glimpse of architectural history. The fortified church has Late Romanesque origins dating to the mid-13th century and was remodelled between 1414 and 1423 as an octagonal Gothic structure. Later, from 1667 to 1675, inserted dividing arcades transformed the Gothic nave into a Baroque church with three naves. The different building phases make the evolution of architectural styles tangible.

Museums and Early History

The interactive exhibitions at the Draškovič Manor House focus on the history of Čachtice, Countess Alžbeta Báthoryová, Haban pottery and Roma history. Other topics include the Tatrín association, the noble families of Čachtice and the furnishings of aristocratic residences. The Podjavorinské Museum focuses on different subjects: its exhibition covers archaeology, history and ethnography, as well as the history of craft guilds in Nové Mesto and the surrounding area and the development of the region’s church history.

At the Stará Turá Town Museum, the “Tradičné bývanie” exhibition displays old furniture, local folk costumes, historical religious books and household items from everyday life in the past. The Park of Miniatures in Podolie offers a different perspective on history: its outdoor exhibition features more than 100 models of castles, châteaux, churches, cottages, lookout towers and birthplaces of notable figures. More models may be added.

The Archeopark Bošácka dolina, newly opened in 2026, offers insights into the lives of people during the last Ice Age, around 33,000 to 22,000 years ago. The site also includes a human dwelling from the late Stone Age or Copper Age, approximately 3,500 years old. Visitors can enter a typical reconstructed house and see a working pottery kiln.

Gorge, Rock and Viewpoints

Haluzická tiesňava is a protected natural monument and a technical structure. It was formed by the erosion of the Haluzický potok. The area has been protected since 1963 and is now under the fourth level of protection. A forest educational trail was built through the gorge in 2012.

Near Stará Turá, Štúrova skala rises as a natural rock outcrop from a wooded slope; it is close to the Dubník reservoir. The site is used for recreation and climbing practice, and the ascent is considered easy. Another viewpoint is the Hájnica tower, which offers panoramic views over the Bošácka dolina, the White Carpathians and the surrounding Kopanice settlements. The 13th-century Romanesque church ruins at Haluzice also offer a view over the Bošácka dolina.

Water and Cycling Routes

The Zelená voda recreation area is 2 kilometres from Nové Mesto nad Váhom. It can be reached from the D1 motorway, as well as by car, bus, bicycle, inline skates or on foot. Windsurfing is available there; seasonal availability may vary. If travelling by bus, check the current service.

The Dubník recreation area consists of two reservoirs: Dubník I and Dubník II, also known as the new and old Dubník. During the summer season, the reservoir offers opportunities for swimming, renting boats and pedal boats, playing tennis and table tennis, and fishing, particularly at Dubník I. These activities are therefore seasonal.

The 13.4-kilometre Horná Streda–Nové Mesto nad Váhom cycling route connects Horná Streda, Brunovce, Potvorice and Považany with Nové Mesto nad Váhom. It is classified as a recreational cycling route, suitable for all age groups, including children, and can also be used on inline skates. A separate connection between Beckov and the Vážska cyklomagistrála is a dedicated route for cyclists and pedestrians, also suitable for families with children and less experienced cyclists.
