Altlublau offers a range of cultural attractions: Ľubovňa Castle, an open-air museum of folk architecture, a historic burgher house and a military exhibition. Two visiting times and the walking time to the castle will help you plan. This allows you to choose sights based on their focus and consider visiting time and travel separately.

Ľubovňa Castle and Open-Air Museum

Ľubovňa Castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century. A visit takes 80 minutes and is possible either with a guide or independently using an accompanying text. As the duration and visiting format may change, check the details before your trip. The castle can be reached by car as far as the castle. From the centre of Stará Ľubovňa, a red-marked hiking trail leads there in about 30 minutes on foot; the route and access may also change.

Below the castle lies the Ľubovniansky skanzen, an open-air museum of folk architecture with 25 exhibits. Allow 45 minutes for a visit; you should also check this visiting time before your trip. The two visiting times can be compared directly: the castle visit is scheduled to take 35 minutes longer than the skanzen visit. This can help you decide which of the two cultural attractions you would like to spend more time visiting.

Burgher House and St. Nicholas Church

The Dom ľubovnianskeho mešťana is located in a historic burgher house dating from the 17th century. Its Renaissance architectural features are complemented by original barrel vaults, stucco decoration and medieval cellars from the 15th century. The exhibition also includes an original black kitchen. The house therefore offers several specific points of interest for a visit that takes in both architecture and the exhibition.

A visit to the burgher house also includes a visit to St. Nicholas Church. The Roman Catholic parish church is a Gothic building dating from the late 13th century. If you would like to see the church interior, please note that interior visits are arranged by the tourist information centre. Check the arrangements for the combined visit and current availability in advance.

Michal Strenk Military Exhibition

The Michal Strenk Military Exhibition offers a different focus. It features realistically designed trenches, bunkers, artillery batteries and military equipment. It is located on Zámocká Street in Stará Ľubovňa, behind the skanzen grounds below Ľubovňa Castle. The exhibition commemorates those who fell in the Second World War, as well as the involvement of local people in the anti-fascist resistance in the region and worldwide. Unlike the buildings and folk-architecture exhibits, its focus is on remembrance of war and resistance.

More Historic Buildings

A cemetery is home to a Neo-Gothic chapel from the early 20th century. The cemetery was reconstructed in 2001 and is enclosed along its entire perimeter. The entrance is through a small building called Ciduk hadin. Its figurative ornaments include lions and eagles. Check access before your visit, as on-site conditions may change.

The wooden Church of the Archangel Michael dates from 1833. Together with St. Nicholas Parish Church, the castle and the cellars of the burgher house, its date provides a point of comparison: St. Nicholas Church dates from the late 13th century, the castle from the early 14th century, the cellars from the 15th century and the burgher house from the 17th century. These dates place different building phases in context; each refers to a distinct historic building.
