The covered colonnade at the Bardejov spa resort features eight different mineral healing springs. The grounds also have hiking trails and an open-air museum of folk architecture. The colonnade, trails and museum appeal to different interests: you can choose how to explore Bardejov based on the focus of your trip—as a place of healing springs, for outdoor trails or for its folk architecture.

Prešov between the Tatras and border routes

The Prešov Region occupies northeastern Slovakia and stretches from west to east. It borders Poland to the north and Ukraine to the east. The High Tatras are part of the region and are a particular draw for hikers. Poloniny National Park is home to Slovakia’s only free-ranging population of European bison.

Cross-border routes are also part of the hiking opportunities: the Veľká Ravka–Kremenec–Nová Sedlica route runs through Poloniny National Park. Another cross-border route there is Wetlina–Riaba skala–Runina, established in 2013. Both routes are cross-border, while the year associated with the second provides a specific historical reference point. For a different way to get around, the Driečna–Puławy cycling route passes through Medzilaborce and continues towards Poland. Ski Drienica has 5 km of groomed cross-country ski trails; check before your trip whether they are currently open.

Archaeology, architecture and museums

The Hanušovce nad Topľou Archaeopark showcases five dwellings from five periods of prehistory and the early Middle Ages. During the Archaeofestivals, craft activities take place there at kilns for ceramics, glass, bread and bronze. A visit brings together dwellings from different periods and work with a range of materials.

The Ľubovňa Open-Air Museum includes a wooden Greek Catholic church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel and built in 1833. The Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce offers a different cultural perspective: it was officially founded by the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic in 1991. The two places therefore offer different viewpoints—historic religious architecture on the one hand and modern art on the other.

At Ľubovňa Castle, the experiences described include exhibitions, a visit to the Ľubomírsky family palace and a climb up the tower. For a visit to Spiš Castle, there are two approximate walking times: about 10 minutes from the car park below the castle, and about an hour from Spišské Podhradie. The difference offers a practical guide for planning your time; check local conditions before visiting.

Visits with seasonal and time-related conditions

The Dubník mines are considered a one-of-a-kind site of the world’s oldest opal mines. From 1 October to 31 March, because bats are hibernating, only one regular tour is offered, and it does not enter the hibernation sites. If you are planning a visit during this period, check the operator’s latest information in advance; seasonal conditions may change.

A visit to the Solivar Museum grounds takes about 90 minutes and is limited to a maximum of 45 visitors per admission. This information helps you plan how long to spend there and account for group size. Together with the approximate walking times to Spiš Castle, it shows how practical planning can vary between cultural destinations.
