Kamienka lies between the Spišská Magura and the Ľubovnianska vrchovina. The municipality stretches along the valley of the Kamninka stream. The Kamienska tisina nature reserve is also located within its cadastral area. It preserves old-growth fir-beech and beech-fir stands, as well as populations of the rare yew. The protected area is not open to the public.

Churches and chapels with their own dates

The Greek Catholic Church of “Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla” and the chapels “Prícestná kaplnka” and “Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky” are among Kamienka’s three national cultural monuments. The church is a Neoclassical building dating from 1790: it has a single nave, a straight termination and a tower integrated into the gabled façade. The “Prícestná kaplnka” is Baroque-Neoclassical and dates from the late 18th century. It stands in the western part of Kamienka and continues to serve its religious purpose. The “Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky” chapel is a national cultural monument dating from 1760.

The dates complement one another: 1760 for the “Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky” chapel, 1790 for the church and the late 18th century for the “Prícestná kaplnka”. This assigns two buildings to a specific year, while the period and Baroque-Neoclassical style provide the historical context for the third chapel.

Medieval local history and Rusyn traditions

The place’s names also reach far back: in 1315, Kamienka appears as “Petri villa”, and in 1342 as “Lapidis”. As early as the Middle Ages, an important trade route from Poland passed through Kamienka. The two names and the historic trade route offer different insights: they show the names by which the place was known and the important connection that ran through it. The medieval history therefore provides an earlier historical context than the churches and chapels described here, which date from the 18th century.

The Barvinok folk ensemble from Kamienka preserves and presents the customs and traditions of the municipality and of the Rusyn minority. These include songs, dances, traditional programmes and church singing. These forms bring together music, dance and religious singing. For travellers interested in Rusyn culture, Barvinok complements the picture of Kamienka’s churches and chapels by sharing its traditions.

Cycling route to a mineral spring

The “Cykloturistický chodník Kamienka” cycling route leads to the Kvašná voda I. (Ščava) mineral spring. The paved route is 295.13 metres long, starts in the Šťava district and ends at its connection with an existing field track. It was created within the municipality’s cadastral area to support cycling tourism and recreational activities. Its destination, length, surface and endpoint give the route a clear profile: the mineral spring is its named destination, while the starting point and connection to the field track clarify its course.

If you are considering Kamienka as a travel destination, it offers several distinct points of interest: historic religious buildings, local history, Rusyn traditions and cycling to a mineral spring. Its location between the Spišská Magura and the Ľubovnianska vrchovina, and in the Kamninka Valley, adds a landscape dimension to these themes. When looking for a holiday rental, you can consider which of these interests best suits your trip.
