Trnkov lies on the northern edge of the Košická kotlina and in the subunit of Toryská pahorkatina. The built-up area is located in a deeply incised small valley formed by the Trnkovský potok; the stream flows in from Maglovec. The landscape descriptions refer to different scales: the two named units provide the broader geographical context, while the valley defines the location of the built-up area more precisely. This distinction is helpful for orientation because it separates the place’s position within the landscape from its specific valley location.

Early history and church

The first official written mention of Trnkov dates from 1330. Direct records from 1332 and 1333 name a priest called Kosmas, who served at the church in Trnkov at the time. Thus, records about a specific person from the town’s religious life follow the first mention of the place just a few years later. The Greek Catholic Church of Ochrana Presvätej Bohorodičky represents a much later period: it was built in 1925 and renovated and extended in 1994. The church has 100 seats and 50 standing places. If you are planning a visit, check the local arrangements in advance. The years 1330 to 1333 form a close sequence; 1925 and 1994, by contrast, mark the construction and a later renovation and extension. This helps distinguish the early written records from the building’s development as separate historical dates.

Traditions and flax processing

The history of the place can also be explored through cultural and economic themes. The municipality describes village customs and songs as Trnkov’s predominant folk traditions. Flax was also grown and processed locally until the developed textile industry displaced this practice. Both themes offer different perspectives from the early written records and church construction. Customs and songs represent the cultural tradition highlighted by the municipality; in the case of flax, the change itself is central: local cultivation and processing were followed by the practice being displaced by the developed textile industry. For culturally minded travelers, these offer different ways to explore the local past: its village traditions and its economic transformation.

Playground and multipurpose sports field

For exercise and recreation, Trnkov has a children’s playground and a multipurpose sports field. The playground is open to all residents and visitors to the municipality. The multipurpose sports field is intended for football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, floorball, ball hockey, nohejbal and other recreational sports. The operating rules, which took effect on July 1, 2025, provide for public access to the field or access based on a reservation. This means purpose and access are two separate aspects of planning: the sports describe the intended use of the field, while the access rules concern how a visit is organized. Public access for visitors is explicitly provided for at the playground; a reservation may be part of the arrangements for the sports field. Before using the sports field, check locally whether a reservation is required.
