Fričovce can be explored through a clear contrast: the Renaissance castle is a striking highlight of its architectural history, while the park, Kanné Valley and panoramic views from the higher parts of the village offer different perspectives on your stay. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether you mainly want to plan a visit to the architecture, time in the green surroundings or a hike.

Renaissance Castle and Park

Fričovce Renaissance Castle was built from 1623 to 1630 by master Michal Sorger from Prešov for the nobleman Valent Berthóty. Originally, 150 mythological and historical figures were depicted on the blind arcades. Their subjects ranged from antiquity through the Middle Ages to modern times. The surviving sgraffito decoration also defines the building; it is one of the rarest of its kind in Slovakia.

The castle is open to the public. Guided tours present its history and architecture, as well as its sgraffito decoration. Check the current tour options before your visit. This lets you plan your visit around your interest in architectural history, façade decoration or both, without treating a guided tour as merely a glimpse of the building.

The castle has an approximately five-hectare park with ponds, water features, old trees and numerous natural nooks. The grounds are suitable for walks and relaxation. This gives you the option of spending time in the green surroundings as well as exploring the architecture: in the park, paths, water and trees are part of the experience, while guided tours focus on history, architecture and decoration.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of Saint Bartholomew was built in 1737–1738 on the site of an earlier Gothic church dating from the 14th or 15th century. Its altar was made by master J. Kebling from Levoča in 1752. A burial chapel was built in front of the church in 1811. It is shaped like a small mausoleum and designed in the Empire style.

Beneath the church is a crypt believed to be the burial place of nobles from the Fričovce branch of the Berthóty family. Its entrance is sealed. This restriction is worth noting when exploring the church’s history. Another date marking the village’s sacred architecture is 1993, when the Roman Catholic Church of the Three Martyrs of Košice was built. Together, the buildings and their dates represent different periods in the village’s history: from the earlier Gothic church to the early 19th-century burial chapel and the late 20th-century church.

Kanné Valley and Landscape

Fričovce is a starting point for access to the Kanné Valley. A marked hiking trail runs through the valley from Šindliar to the Branisko ridge. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing the access point from the trail’s route: Fričovce is mentioned as a starting point for the valley, while the route runs from Šindliar to the Branisko ridge.

North of Fričovce lies Hradisko, an archaeological site where finds from an early medieval Slavic hillfort have been discovered. Panoramic views can be found in the higher parts of Fričovce. These offer different ways to explore the village’s history and landscape: Hradisko is about archaeological finds, while the viewpoint looks out over the surrounding area.

Fričovce lies along the route of the D1 motorway. According to the municipality’s assessment, this location helps make the village accessible; the assessment also notes traffic noise. Both aspects should therefore be considered when planning your journey.
