Explore Snina from two perspectives: the Neoclassical manor house and traces of a historic forest railway tell the story of the town, while cycling and hiking routes offer further ways to experience its culture, nature and recreation. When planning, it is worth looking beyond distances alone. One route takes you through the town’s history in nine stops; other excursions connect Snina with a recreation area or head towards a hiking destination. This lets you decide whether to focus on cultural stops, physical activity or nature.

Cultural History in Snina

The Neoclassical manor house was built in 1781 on the site of an earlier wooden building. Following its restoration, it was ceremonially opened to the public on 5 July 2013 as part of the celebrations marking the 1,150th anniversary of the arrival of Cyril and Methodius. The manor house contains museum and gallery exhibitions, including the “Ozveny Sniny” exhibition.

Another chapter in local history is told by the “Sninská úzkokoľajová lesná dráha (S.U.L.D.)”. The narrow-gauge railway transported timber from the Vihorlat Mountains to a local sawmill in Snina; its tracks had a gauge of 760 millimetres. Several culverts and bridges from the original line have survived. The remains are stop 8 on the “Za históriou Sniny” town cycling route, linking the historic railway with a present-day way to discover the town’s history by bike.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

The “Za históriou Sniny” town cycling route is ten kilometres long and has nine stops. It takes you through Snina’s history and highlights the town’s historical, cultural and natural landmarks. The route is rated easy and is also suitable for families with children looking for an active way to spend their time.

The “Snina – Sninský kameň” hiking route is 8.9 kilometres long and moderately difficult. The distances for the cycling route and hike are similar, but they are different experiences: the cycling tour features nine cultural stops, while the hiking route is rated moderately difficult.

The “Snina – Sninské rybníky – Biele kamene” cycling trip starts in Snina and heads to the popular Sninské rybníky recreation area. From there, the route continues along forest tracks towards Biele kamene. This offers an alternative to the town’s historical route, with a different focus.

Ponds, Forest and Nature

Sninské rybníky offer a setting for walks and picnics, combined with mushroom picking. The forests around the ponds, consisting mainly of mixed woodland, provide favourable conditions for mushroom growth from spring until late autumn. Picking fresh mushrooms can also have a culinary purpose: they can be gathered for use in cooking.

Mlynisko has its own connections with nature and leisure. Surrounded by greenery, the ponds provide a refuge for various species of waterfowl and other wildlife. Mlynisko pond is also used for sport fishing.

For regional information, the tourist information centre provides up-to-date details about hiking trails, cycling routes, natural landmarks and places of interest. This can help you choose how to combine the town’s history with a cycling or hiking trip and its different natural attractions.
