Sabinov District brings together short educational trails, longer hikes, winter sports, nature reserves and urban cultural heritage. When planning, it helps to consider what kind of outing you are looking for: a marked route with a stated walking time, a short nature trail or places with historical and religious themes.

Hiking and Castles: Distinguishing Route Length and Access

The Čergov Educational and Recreational Trail runs for about one kilometre through the forest. Playful and educational stations introduce traditional symbols of the Čergov, including a shepherd’s hut and a wolf’s den. The easiest way to reach the trail is by taking the Drienica–Lysá chairlift; the ride also offers views as you ascend. More experienced hikers can instead walk up the paved road, which is more challenging. As the lift’s operating schedule may vary by season, check it before your visit.

For a longer hike, try the marked Nižný Slavkov–Bišar–Tichý Potok route: it is 13.8 kilometres long, listed as taking 3 hours and 50 minutes in total, and rated easy. This makes it possible to plan the hike differently from the roughly one-kilometre educational trail. Route details may be updated, so check the latest information before setting out.

Castles also add a historical dimension to hiking. Kamenica Castle stands on a high limestone crag above the village of Kamenica. Built in the 13th century, it is believed to have served as a royal hunting castle. A well-marked footpath leads up from Kamenica, with information boards about the village’s history and the nature of the castle hill. A less challenging yellow-marked route leads from Lúčky via Potoky, where the ascent is gentler. Hanigovský (New) Castle stands above Hanigovce on a side ridge of the Čergov; marked paths lead up from Hanigovce and Ľutina.

Nature Reserves, Ponds and Active Alternatives

Several protected areas showcase different landscape and nature themes. The Čergovský Minčol National Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral area of Kamenica. The private SPR Vlčia Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Olejníkov and was Slovakia’s first private nature reserve. The Bišar Nature Reserve protects montane flower meadows where the rare fire lily (Lilium bulbiferum) grows.

At the ponds of Uzovský Šalgov, a nature trail combines information about their history and technical features with details about the animals and plants found there. The ponds are used for controlled fishing and are among the important bodies of water for wildlife in northern Šariš. Birds also use the area during migration and the nesting season. Nature enthusiasts will find this a distinct focus alongside the hiking trails.

For winter sports, Ski Búče offers 4.5 kilometres of downhill runs in easy, intermediate and difficult categories. The facilities cater to families with children as well as advanced skiers. Details about the facilities and runs may change, so check them before planning your visit. Lipany Thermal Park offers thermal pools, a relaxation area and a family-friendly atmosphere year-round. Here, too, it is advisable to check the latest visitor information before your visit, as services may change.

Sabinov, Crafts and Religious Culture

In Sabinov, 30 burgher houses around Námestie slobody are protected as historic monuments. The Sabinov Town Days, held every June and including the Market of Sabinov, offer a seasonal event. Check the specific programme for your travel dates. On 19 May 2026, the city took over the completed “CYKLOCHODNÍK HRADOBNÁ ULIČKA SABINOV” project; the southern edge of the central conservation area was extensively revitalised.

The pilgrimage complex in Ľutina includes chapels, an open-air museum of wooden churches and a wooden church with an observation tower. At the museum, replicas of wooden churches from Slovakia and neighbouring border regions can be seen in one place. Brezovica offers a different glimpse into local architectural and craft culture, with elements of folk architecture and traditional crafts still alive there. These themes complement the nature and hiking options with destinations focused on culture and history.
