Štrbské Pleso is part of the Tatra National Park (TANAP), Slovakia’s oldest national park. The lake that gives the area its name, Štrbské pleso, is the second-largest mountain lake in the Slovak part of the High Tatras. Visitors planning a stay can combine nature and scenery with insights into the area’s history and seasonal winter activities.

Scenery and Learning Along the Way

The Štrbské Pleso nature trail explores several aspects of the region. Its 40 attractive wooden information boards cover local history, flora and fauna, notable people who worked here, sporting events and the area’s spa history. The boards are in Slovak and English. The trail is accessible and open year-round; check local conditions before setting out.

Another nature trail leads from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso and back. Its 14 stops cover the plants and animal species of the surrounding area, as well as the formation and geology of the Tatras. The trail starts in Štrbské Pleso and remains open in winter. When there is snow, hikers are redirected to a winter route. So check local seasonal conditions before planning your route.

A 2.2-kilometre fitness and oxygen trail with six stations also runs around Štrbské pleso. The trails therefore differ in length and focus: one presents local and natural history topics on information boards, another explores the Tatras and their surroundings at 14 stops, while the loop around the lake is designated as a fitness and oxygen trail with six stations.

Local History and Skiing

The names and former uses of local places also tell stories of the past. Jazierka lásky were originally known as Štrbské rybníky, meaning fishponds. Jozef Szentiványi used them to breed trout. The history of skiing is reflected elsewhere: Skokanské mostíky took their present form during preparations for the 1970 World Ski Championships.

Winter Activities with Different Focuses

The Štrbské Pleso ski area has nine kilometres of easy, gentle runs, as well as intermediate slopes. The piste configuration may change, so check the current conditions when planning your winter sports days. Another winter activity is a 100-metre snow tubing track, whose seasonal availability may vary.

The cross-country skiing area near Štrbské Pleso has eight trails ranging from 1.4 to 5 kilometres in length. Facilities include a visitor tent, a buffet, a ski school, ski servicing and ski rental. These services may vary by season.

For ski tourers, a route starts at the valley station of the chairlift to Solisko. Yellow trail markers lead to the foot of Skok Waterfall. Winter access depends on snow conditions, safety rules and conditions on the mountain. Check the current situation before setting out and plan your tour accordingly.

Planning Your Journey and Stay

The Tatra Electric Railway connects Poprad Tatry, Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso. The cog railway connects Tatranská Štrba with Štrbské Pleso and has been operating since 1896. Check the timetables before travelling; cog railway schedules are seasonal. Štrbské Pleso can also be reached via a nearby exit from the D1 motorway.

The activities on offer have different focuses: nature trails explore natural history and local history, while cross-country skiing, downhill runs, snow tubing and ski touring provide winter options. If you are looking for accommodation, these interests may help you choose your destination. For a winter stay, also take seasonal activities and conditions into account, rather than assuming that the availability of one activity means another is available too.
