Velký Slavkov is presented as a starting point for visitors to the High Tatras, while also offering options for cultural and leisure activities: two churches from different building periods, the Burich archaeological site, and Adventure Golf. When planning your stay, both routes into the High Tatras and the things you would like to explore locally are worth considering.

Plan your journey and stay

The proximity of Poprad–Tatry International Airport makes Velký Slavkov easy to reach. From here, the High Tatras can be reached by the Tatra Electric Railway, bus services, and private transport. This gives you different transport options when planning your trip. Check the Tatra Railway and bus timetables for your travel dates so you can coordinate your onward journey into the High Tatras with your choice of accommodation.

Churches from two building periods

The Evangelical church in Velký Slavkov was built in 1786–1788 as a towerless Toleration church. Its architecture is described as a hall building with a semicircular end. The history of the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle goes much further back: it dates from the 13th century. The single-nave early Gothic building was constructed around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.

The original medieval form of the Catholic church has largely been preserved. The south portal is also noteworthy: it is considered an example of Gothic stone carving. Together, these buildings offer a comparison between an Evangelical Toleration church from the late 18th century and an early Gothic building largely preserved in its medieval form. Their construction dates, basic forms, and portal offer different points of reference for exploring the history of the village.

Burich: archaeology and landscape

The Burich archaeological site lies on an inconspicuous hill that contains a hillfort dating from the La Tène period. The path to Burich climbs the small hill and offers a view over the Poprad Basin. Burich is also a popular destination for walks among residents and visitors to Velký Slavkov. Archaeological history and a tangible view of the landscape come together here.

A marked cycle route leads from Velký Slavkov to Burich. As route conditions can change, check them locally. Slavkovský štít (2,452 m) also connects the names of the village and the mountains: the peak is named after Velký Slavkov. A written account of a three-day ascent in June 1664 has also been preserved.

Mini golf and a break

Adventure Golf Veľký Slavkov has an 18-hole mini-golf course. Mini golf is presented as entertainment for the whole family and for groups. The grounds also include the traditional Slovak restaurant Salaš Slavkov. Alongside the churches and Burich, this offers a clearly defined leisure activity and a restaurant as local points of interest.

A municipal notice published in April 2024 describes a rest area near Velký Slavkov with a wooden shelter, seating, and a fire pit.
