Heritage in Poprad and Spišská Sobota
The Tomb of the Prince of Poprad is the burial place of a Germanic prince from the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries AD. Its wooden architecture and furnishings are unique in Europe in terms of their state of preservation. Spišská Sobota in Poprad represents a different historical period: its urban conservation area has been uniquely preserved, and the square is lined with Renaissance and Gothic burgher houses.
The Church of St. George in Spišská Sobota dates from the mid-13th century. It has a Gothic interior and an altar from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. A visit to the branch of the Podtatranské Museum also takes you into the conservation area: it is housed in a burgher house within the area that is listed as a national cultural monument.
In Poprad city centre stands the early Gothic Church of St. Egidius, dating from the 13th century. Its interior is adorned with an exceptional collection of medieval paintings. On a guided tour, you can climb to a height of 26 metres and enjoy panoramic views from the tower gallery. Check booking options before planning a tower visit.
Exhibitions and cultural programme
Scherfelov dom was established in 2008. Its permanent exhibition focuses on the life, scientific work and extensive civic engagement of Viliam Scherfel. The building also serves as a gallery and hosts various exhibitions. Find out what exhibitions are currently on offer before your visit.
Popradské kultúrne leto has a tradition spanning more than 20 years and takes place annually. The 2024 programme included Friday concerts and Saturday morning fairy tales for children. If you want to plan your trip around a particular cultural event, check the dates for your chosen period.
Hiking and scenery in Kvetnica
The Kvetnica educational trail features nine stops explaining Slovak forest vegetation zones, the historic archaeological site of Zámčisko and the Hranovnícka dubina National Nature Reserve. Kvetnica also has several marked hiking trails and circular routes. A Stations of the Cross route leads to the Resurrection Chapel near the 941-metre-high peak of Krížová.
From the educational trail, visitors can reach the 921-metre-high peak of Zámčisko and enjoy views of the surrounding landscape. A circular route along the educational trail starts in Kvetnica Forest Park, is 13.6 kilometres long and takes about three hours and 45 minutes. The approximate duration provides a practical guide for planning your day.
