Hôrka combines ecclesiastical architectural history, an important archaeological site and a distinctive natural environment. In Ondrej and Kišovce, two churches serve different parish functions; at Smrečányiho skala, the research history reaches back to the Middle Paleolithic. Mineral springs and protected areas with characteristic plant communities add to the picture. So, when deciding whether Hôrka matches your travel interests, you can distinguish between traces of the past and nature-related themes.

Location and landscape

Hôrka is about 7 km from Poprad, in the direction of Levoča. The cadastral area is the appropriate scale for describing the landscape: it lies in the valley of the Gánovský potok, whose course and other landform-shaping processes created a valley basin there. This makes it possible to distinguish between directions to the village and a description of the landscape: the distance refers to Hôrka, while the description of the valley basin refers to the municipality’s cadastral area.

Churches and postal history

Kostol sv. Ondreja is located in the district of Ondrej. The early Gothic church dates from the mid-13th century and was remodelled in the 18th century. It is currently the parish church of the Hôrka parish. Its architectural history therefore connects two widely separated periods: the medieval construction of the church and a later remodelling. In Kišovce, Kostol sv. Márie Magdalény is currently a filial church.

The postal service adds another historical layer. Its beginnings in Hôrka date back to the mid-16th century. A post office was probably established in the then-independent municipality of Kišovce before 1556. Kišovce therefore features both as a district with a filial church and in the history of the former postal service.

Smrečányiho skala and early history

The archaeological site of Smrečányiho skala gives Hôrka European significance. Systematic research at the site identified three settlement phases of the Middle Paleolithic: an older, a middle and a younger phase. These phases date from approximately 160,000 to 40,000 years ago. This sequence offers a different time horizon from the history of the churches and postal service. For travellers interested in prehistory, this far-reaching history of settlement is a clear highlight.

Mineral springs and protected plants

There are numerous mineral springs with recent travertine formation in the municipal area. Two nature reserves add to the natural environment, but focus on different features. Švábovská stráň protects thermophilous plant communities, including spring pheasant’s eye (Adonis vernalis). Primovské skaly preserves plant communities of relict character from various origins, including Allium strictum and Pulsatilla patens. The comparison distinguishes the botanical themes: thermophilous communities in one area, and plant populations with relict character and diverse origins in the other.

Explore Hôrka according to your interests

The timeline helps distinguish Hôrka’s cultural themes: church construction and postal history belong to different periods in the history of the village, while the settlement phases of Smrečányiho skala go tens of thousands of years further back. If you prefer nature-related themes, you can instead focus on the geological springs and the differing conservation aims of the two areas. This makes it possible to explore Hôrka according to your own interests without giving all the themes equal weight.
