Batizovce combines its location at the southern foot of the High Tatras with village history, traditional crafts, and a lively Shrovetide custom. Visitors can explore a range of interests: an exhibition about household life and work, buildings from several historical periods, a regional nature trail, and a competition featuring traditional Batizovské pirohy. If you are planning a stay, you can choose between local history, customs, and exploring the surrounding landscape.

Plain at the Southern Foot of the High Tatras

Batizovce lies on a plain at the southern foot of the High Tatras. The Batizovský potok stream flows through the village between two parallel roads. Together, these features connect the surrounding landscape with the village’s specific layout.

Everyday Life, Crafts, and Shrovetide

The Batizovská izba is located in the building of the former Evangelical primary school, which was built in 1909. Its exhibition presents domestic life, tools for processing flax and weaving, equipment for preparing food, traditional farm crafts, and traditional clothing. Together, these subjects offer insight into households, working methods, and dress. The Batizovská izba also houses an oldest surviving object dating from 1815. The Hasičská izba is also located in the former school building.

On the last day of Shrovetide, “chodenie so straškom” is a living tradition in Batizovce. A procession of young men in costume is led by Slameňák, Brucháč, Kováči, and Tety. In contrast to the exhibition, with its objects and themes of everyday life, this is a seasonal custom. In Batizovce, you can encounter different forms of local culture: preserved objects and craft activities, as well as a living Shrovetide tradition.

Churches, a Castle, and Older Traces

The Evangelical church in Batizovce is a Neoclassical building dating from 1786 to 1791. It has a stone Renaissance baptismal font dated to the 16th to 17th century. The building and the font thus represent different historical periods. Archaeological finds from the grounds of the Roman Catholic church are attributed to the developed La Tène culture, adding an archaeological perspective to the history of the buildings. The Baroque castle dates from 1756 and stands in a park in the center of Batizovce.

Nature Trail and Viewpoint

The “Náučný chodník 4 podtatranských obcí” nature trail connects Batizovce, Mengusovce, Gerlachov, and Štôla. It has four information boards, each with a seating area, a bicycle rack, and a trash bin. The Batizovská vyhliadka “Tatry ako na dlani” in Batizovce offers a different perspective. For visitors driving or cycling through the municipality, the viewpoint has a telescope and an information board. The trail connects several municipalities, while the viewpoint provides a local point of reference.

Batizovské Pirohy and Choosing Where to Stay

The local food culture also has a specific connection to the village: the competition featuring traditional Batizovské pirohy reached its 13th edition in 2026. This brings the competition’s established tradition to life and adds a culinary focus to the insights into history and customs. When looking for hotels in Batizovce, you can consider what interests you most: exhibitions and historic buildings, the Shrovetide custom, or finding your way between the nature trail and the viewpoint.
