Majere lies on the right bank of the Dunajec, near the Polish border. Northeast of Spišská Stará Ves, the village is located on the road to Červený Kláštor; Majere is also in the protected zone of Pieniny National Park. Jordanec, a tributary of the Dunajec, lies between Majere and Červený Kláštor. The river, protected zone and road provide concrete points of reference.
Rafting on the Dunajec
A rafting trip starting in Majere passes through the Dunajec Gorge below the Three Crowns. The rafting route from the Majere-Kvašné lúky landing stage to Lesnica is 11 kilometres long. Tourist rafting on the Dunajec began in 1832. The rafts themselves also have a distinctive construction: they consist of five wooden sections made from three wide planks.
Seasonal operating details may vary. Check them when planning a rafting trip. This helps you account for the specific arrangements when planning, without equating the route length or its landscape setting with the duration of the trip.
Educational Trails and Cycling Routes
The Pieninská cesta between Červený Kláštor and Szczawnica now serves as an educational trail and cycling route. A cycling route through Zamagurie passes through Majere; you can also explore the wider area by bicycle. In Pieniny National Park and its protected zone, cycling is permitted on designated cycling routes. If you are planning a cycling trip, check local trail conditions and stay on the designated routes.
A trail through the Dunajec Gorge is suitable for hiking and also serves as an educational route with ten stations. The options described therefore differ by activity: the Pieninská cesta combines a cycling route and educational trail between two places, while the trail through the Dunajec Gorge is designated as a hiking route with ten stations. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
History of Majere
An old manor farm in Majere is documented as far back as 1568. Between 1786 and 1798, German settlers from Wütenberg settled the area, establishing the settlement of Vyšné Šváby. The dates refer to different historical events: 1568 to the manor farm, and the later period to the settlement and the founding of Vyšné Šváby.
Land in the area of present-day Majere was also administered during a period of hermit life in Lechnica and Červený Kláštor. This historical context adds to the information about the manor farm and settlement without equating the two dates.
Sheep Products and Getting Around
At Salaš Pieniny in Majere, sheep products are offered in keeping with ancestral traditions, including bryndza made from 100 percent sheep’s milk. Visitors can try marinated sheep’s cheese with herbs in olive oil there. The focus on regional sheep products adds a culinary option to the nature and trail themes.
There is a car park by the rafting landing stage in Majere, and another by Salaš Pieniny. These two named points of interest can also help you find your way around locally.
