For planning your trip, Lendak offers two distinct areas of interest: cultural history in the village and nature destinations in the surrounding area. St. Nicholas Church and the Múzeum ľudovej kultúry offer different perspectives on the village’s history; two nature reserves lie to the west and southeast of the village. There is also a wild boar enclosure near Lendak with an adjoining educational trail, as well as specific cycling opportunities. This gives you a choice of whether historical sights or nature and outdoor activities should determine where you stay.

Church, Folk Architecture and Local History

St. Nicholas Church dates from the early 14th century. It houses a Gothic Madonna, also known as the “Lendak Madonna,” dating from around 1420. There is also a crowned, crucified Jesus on the cross, dated to the first half of the 13th century, around 1235. The dates therefore range from around 1235, through the construction of the church, to the Madonna around 1420. For anyone interested in religious history, this span of time makes the church a notable cultural attraction.

The Múzeum ľudovej kultúry complements this focus with traditional folk architecture. The museum preserves the memory, history and traditions of Lendak. Its exhibitions illustrate traditional homes, material culture, folk costumes and the way of life of the village’s residents in past centuries. It therefore covers not only individual historical objects but also the homes and everyday lives of earlier generations. The museum is open to the public daily year-round from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; check the opening hours before your trip.

The former monastery is also part of Lendak’s architectural history. Baron Andrej Horváth-Palocs had the building extensively remodelled in the Empire style from 1812 to 1814. After it was sold, the former monastery was converted into a manor house. The building’s history thus adds a distinct chapter on local architecture and changing uses to the religious heritage and folk architecture.

Festivals and Cultural Heritage

The traditional Juliáles festival has been held in Lendak since 2007. A musical performance was scheduled as part of the Juliáles 2026 folklore festival. A goulash cooking competition was announced in Lendak for 2026; registration was available. Check the event date before your trip.

Another part of the local culture is the preschool folklore group in Lendak. It teaches children Goral songs, dances, greetings and proverbs; the children perform at various events. Alongside historic buildings and exhibitions, the village’s culture therefore includes the passing down of songs, dances and oral traditions.

Nature Destinations and Cycling Nearby

The Belianske lúky Nature Reserve lies southeast of Lendak, while the Pálenica Nature Reserve is west of the village. For observing wild boars, the nearby Diviačia obora enclosure offers the opportunity to see the animals in a safe, fenced area. The Belianske lúky educational trail starts right next to it, on the cycle path between Tatranská Kotlina and Spišská Belá. At the start of the trail is a wooden shelter with the sign “Šarpanec – odbočka Lendak.”

Another specific cycling option is the forest road near Altánok na Farskom, which is used as a cycling route. There is a lockable bicycle rack at the Altánok na Farskom rest area. The shelters that have been built also have fire pits for roasting food. The nature areas, educational trail and cycling route offer different options to consider when planning your trip; the directions and locations given here will help you find each one.
