Medzilaborce offers a variety of options for a stay: the history of Rusyn villages, sacred architecture and routes in the surrounding area. The town lies at the confluence of the Laborec and Vydraňka rivers in the Laborecká vrchovina, below the ridge of the Low Beskids. If you are looking for a hotel, one question can help with your planning: should your stay focus mainly on churches and history, or would you also like to set aside time for a route? The following places and trails provide specific points of reference.
Rusyn Culture and Sacred Buildings
The open-air museum in Medzilaborce contains handcrafted replicas of Rusyn houses from surrounding villages and presents the history of a Rusyn village. The focus is therefore not just on individual buildings, but also on the history of a village. According to the town's visitor information, updated in 2021, the open-air museum can only be visited accompanied by a staff member. Please check the arrangements in advance.
The Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit, with its unique architecture, is a landmark of Medzilaborce. It contains a composition of 350 icons covering an area of about 1,600 square metres. The Greek Catholic Church of St Basil the Great is also one of the town's oldest monuments. Services and sacraments there are celebrated or administered in Church Slavonic and Rusyn.
The Roman Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary was built in 1903. A Lourdes grotto in front of the Roman Catholic parish church was solemnly blessed in 2002. Together, the churches offer a glimpse of the religious and architectural themes that shape Medzilaborce, whose history is not limited to a single place of worship.
Wartime History and Events
The exhibition “Boje v Karpatoch – Medzilaborce 1914/1915” at the cultural centre presents the course of the fighting in northeastern Slovakia, particularly in Medzilaborce and the surrounding area. It covers the battles on the Carpathian Front, which took place in Medzilaborce and its surroundings from autumn 1914 to spring 1915, and displays historical uniforms, equipment and weapons used by the armies involved. Check current access arrangements before your visit.
Local memorials also include a monument to those killed in the First and Second World Wars, unveiled on the fifth anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising, and a Holocaust memorial, unveiled on 31 July 2008. The Festival of Culture and Sport takes place annually in June in Medzilaborce. If this event is important for your trip, check that year's programme.
Forest Nature Trail, Border Ridge and Landscape
The forest nature trail in Lesopark Kamjana starts at the cultural and sports complex on Mierova Street. The route takes about three hours and is suitable for individual, family and school educational trips. It reaches Kameň, at 433 metres, with its distinctive rock formation known as Čertov kameň. The route description therefore gives you an approximate timeframe and a specific natural landmark to help with planning.
Another route option is “Vydraňským chotárom”. It passes through Vydraň, now a district of Medzilaborce, and continues to the Slovak-Polish border ridge. Along the way, it offers views of Medzilaborce, the Laborecká vrchovina, the Vihorlat Mountains and the Slanské vrchy. The routes differ mainly in their focus: the forest nature trail highlights the approximate timeframe and Kameň, while the route through Vydraň leads to the border ridge and offers views of several landscapes.
The natural conditions in the surrounding area are suitable for hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and other activities. Conditions and facilities may vary seasonally. The Eastern Carpathians Protected Landscape Area is based in Medzilaborce and is Slovakia's easternmost protected landscape area. The routes and landscape setting thus complement the town's cultural history with a distinct focus on nature.
