The Žitava floodplain and terrace shape the landscape of Slepčany; historic buildings and a technical monument add to the character of the village. You can choose different focuses for your trip: walks in the wooded area, architectural history or the regional wine route. The reservoir is also within the cadastral area, but it is not automatically part of every planned route.

Landscape along the Žitava

Slepčany lies in the Žitavská pahorkatina and Pohronská pahorkatina uplands, as well as in the floodplain and on the terrace of the Žitava. The terrain is gently undulating, ranging from flat stretches to hilly areas. The river lowlands and higher-lying landforms therefore sit side by side, but this does not imply any specific route or walking time. The wooded area along the Žitava is suitable for walks year-round; check the local trail conditions before making firm plans for your outing.

There is also a reservoir within the cadastral area of Slepčany. Check locally before adding activities such as sport fishing or swimming at the reservoir to your plans. This means that your choice of outing remains subject to the conditions at the time, rather than assuming that these activities are currently available.

Church, chapels and local history

Juraj Selepčéni-Pohronec (1595–1685), Archbishop of Esztergom and Primate of Hungary, was born in Slepčany. A monument to him stands beside the church dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. The church was built in 1880–1881 in the neoclassical style. Its construction period offers a distinct historical reference point in the village; for comparison with an earlier building, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary dates from 1778.

A chapel with a statue of Saint Urban stands among the vineyards. The saint also features in local tradition surrounding a festival, which includes a Mass and gatherings with wine tasting. The chapel and the church represent different religious associations, while the vineyards draw attention to the regional wine culture. Inzulov Park offers a different landscape feature, characterised by plantings of exotic trees and shrubs.

Another historical site is Zungov. The technical monument was built in 1911 by the Ostrihomer Chapter to irrigate meadows. It draws attention to a practical purpose: churches and chapels are not the only parts of the village’s history; technical structures also belong to it. Together with the monument to Juraj Selepčéni-Pohronec, it offers a chance to consider different forms of remembrance and historical tradition.

Walks and regional trails

A green-marked hiking trail leads from Slepčany railway station via Mlyňany Arboretum and the Lion Monument to the SAD bus stop in Veľké Vozokany. The route therefore has named stops and a specific endpoint; no walking time or distance is given. Check the current trail markings and local access before setting out. For a more leisurely walk, consider the wooded area along the Žitava. The route and the walk are different options: one is described as a sequence of stops, while the other focuses on the riverside landscape.

Wine route and trip planning

Slepčany is an access point to the Horné Požitavie Wine Route. This regional connection offers a distinct focus for a trip, alongside the local stories and landscape. The wine tasting at the feast of Saint Urban and the wine route are two different ways to explore the subject of wine; the route description alone does not specify a particular event date.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Slepčany, first consider what you want your trip to focus on: a walk along the Žitava, the historic buildings or an outing connected with the wine route. You can weigh these themes side by side when planning, without turning them into a fixed daily itinerary. It is advisable to check locally before your visit for activities at the reservoir and for hiking trails.
