Komárno can be explored through very different places: a fortress system, architecture from 36 European countries and regions, a thermal bath with seasonal and year-round facilities, and paths along the Váh. This offers a choice of different focuses, from cultural history and swimming to spending time outdoors.

Fortress with Medieval Origins

Pevnosť Komárno is part of the most extensive fortress system in Central Europe, which extends across the Slovak Republic and Hungary. Its oldest section is Stará pevnosť, built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. There is one clear condition for visiting: for safety reasons, the fortress can only be accessed as part of a guided tour. Winter tours are weather-dependent. The history of the site thus connects a medieval predecessor with the 16th-century fortress section; guided tours are also required for visits today.

Architecture and Museum Collections

At Nádvorie Európy, characteristic features of architecture from 36 European countries and regions are displayed in one place. Podunajské múzeum has exhibitions and displays in three buildings in the centre of Komárno. The museum also includes a lapidarium of Roman stone monuments, located in Bastion No. 6 of the fortress system on the outskirts of the city. The central museum buildings and the collection of Roman stone monuments in a bastion offer different ways to explore the city’s history.

Monuments and Building History

Námestie generála Klapku is dominated by the statue of György Klapka, a representative of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–49. The Marian Column of the Holy Trinity, also called Súsošie Najsvätejšej Trojice or Trojičný stĺp, dates from 1715. It commemorates the plague epidemic of 1710–1711 and the end of the Kuruc Wars. The building history of Kostol sv. Ondreja is also part of the city’s historical character: work on the church lasted from 1723 to 1763. Together, these places represent different aspects of the past, from a historical figure and commemoration to building history.

Thermal Baths: Summer Facilities and Year-Round Pool

In summer, Termálne kúpalisko Komárno offers a 2.5-hectare site and seven different pools. The baths also have a Finnish sauna with a capacity of up to 20 people. An outdoor pool is open year-round; its retractable roof can be partially opened or closed. When planning a trip, it is helpful to distinguish between the explicitly seasonal summer facilities and the year-round pool. If the baths are an important part of your stay, you can plan your travel dates around which of these options is your priority.

Cycling and Running Routes by the Water

Mŕtve rameno Váhu, located by the Váh, offers opportunities to relax in nature, with designated picnic areas. Cycling, inline skating and running routes run around Mŕtve rameno Váhu and the Váh. Pevnosť Komárno offers another cycling connection: the EuroVelo 6 cycle route runs along the fortress. This describes two different options for cyclists—the route along the fortress and the routes around Mŕtve rameno Váhu and the Váh—without combining them into a single route.
