The so-called Old Fortress in Komárno stands at a site where different eras overlap: it was built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. The fortress in Komárno is part of the most extensive fortress system in Central Europe, which extends across Slovakia and Hungary. It is open to the general public year-round; check the current visiting conditions before your visit.

Fortress History Reaching the Danube

The historic entrance gates also tell stories of connections between places and rulers. They connect Komárno’s historic centre with Nádvorie Európy; each gate bears the name of a Hungarian ruler. In this way, a specific local history and a broader historical context meet in Komárno.

The western section of the Danube Limes ran for almost 600 kilometres along the Danube, from Bad Gögging in Germany through Austria to Iža in Slovakia. It followed the northern and eastern borders of the Roman provinces of Raetia, Noricum and northern Pannonia. The historic route thus reaches Iža and makes the long Danube frontier a subject of a visit.

Wetlands and a Danube Cycle Route

Číčovské mŕtve rameno lies partly within the cadastral area of the municipality of Číčov and partly within that of Kľúčovec. It is part of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area, which covers a total of 12,284.5 hectares. This forms a substantial part of the Dunajské luhy Ramsar site, which covers 14,488 hectares. The oxbow lake is home to rare aquatic and wetland communities; it is also designated as a habitat of international importance for waterbirds.

Another important natural area is Ostrovné lúky: it serves as both a breeding and survival habitat for the red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus). If you would like to combine views of the landscape with a cycling route, EuroVelo 6 offers a clearly described section: the 168-kilometre Bratislava–Štúrovo route passes through Komárno along the Danube as an easy road route. Check the road surface and signage before setting off.

Thermal Waters and Special Visits

At the thermal spa in Komárno, the thermal water comes from a borehole 1,060 metres deep. It emerges at 45.2°C and is channelled into indoor pools and selected outdoor pools. The outdoor area offers up to seven different ways to enjoy the facilities. Check which outdoor facilities are available before your visit.

Thermál Nesvady is open year-round and uses geothermal water that emerges from a depth of 1,504 metres at 62°C. The facilities also include a seasonal children’s pool for children up to six years old. Comparing the two thermal spas therefore raises different considerations: in Komárno, the focus is on the various ways to enjoy the outdoor facilities, while at Nesvady, year-round operation and a seasonal pool for younger children are among the features described.

In Hurbanovo, the observatory combines history with observations of the night sky: its history dates back to 1871. It is open to the public during the day and in the evening, and also offers night-sky observations. Visitors can also arrange a private tour of the permanent exhibition at the M. T. Konkoly Museum. Check the current schedule before travelling.

The watermill ship in Kolárovo is the last surviving example of a floating mill and the only watermill ship in Slovakia. It houses the Museum of Water Milling. Visitor information dated 26 May 2026 lists daily visits from 10:00 to 17:00 and guided tours every 15 minutes; check these times again before travelling. Visitors to the Kelemantia Roman and Ethnographic Museum in Iža can also be received outside regular opening hours by prior arrangement.
