Art in a Neoclassical manor house, a historic church monument and the pilgrimage site of Skalka give Tvrdošín its cultural character. The town lies in northern Slovakia, at the southeastern tip of the Orava Basin, between the Skorušinské Mountains and the Orava Hills. Those looking to include nature and outdoor activities will find more to explore in Oravice, where hiking, cycling and winter sports take centre stage in a mountainous landscape.
Art and Architectural History in Tvrdošín
The Márie Medvecká Gallery features a permanent exhibition with a selection of works from the life’s work of the painter and national artist. Since 1979, it has been housed in a 19th-century Neoclassical manor house. The exhibition includes 180 paintings and 88 drawings; the number of works on display may change with the exhibition layout. The gallery offers a direct introduction to Medvecká’s work, as well as a glimpse of the historic building.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the gallery’s attic rooms, known as the “Ateliér,” have been used for temporary visual art exhibitions since 2000. Those wishing to explore different forms of cultural heritage can also visit the historic church monument complex in Tvrdošín. It dates back to the first half of the 15th century and was remodelled in the Renaissance style in 1650–1654.
Skalka and Living Traditions
The pilgrimage site of Skalka began as a chapel carved into the rock around 1870. Prayers, litanies and Stations of the Cross devotions are held there, as is a Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The site also includes a shelter and an access road. Its religious character is shaped by its origins as well as its history.
Tradition is also at the heart of the folklore festival beneath Osobitá. The town of Tvrdošín organises this annual event in Oravice to help preserve folk traditions. The programme includes traditional children’s games, songs and dances, though individual events may vary from year to year. Check the dates and programme for the relevant edition when planning your visit.
The Michalský jarmok, a traditional fair held in Tvrdošín every year at the end of September, offers another expression of local customs. Depending on the edition, visitors can find handicrafts, traditional specialities, handmade goods and refreshments. The folklore festival and the fair have different focuses: the former highlights stage performances and folk traditions, while the latter features market stalls and goods. The specific offerings may vary.
Trails and Nature in Oravice
The nature trail in the Juráňova Valley is located in the protected area of TANAP. The trail leads into a one-kilometre-long limestone gorge equipped with paths and benches. The landscape of the gorge is shaped by a striking canyon, water-eroded hollows and small waterfalls.
Another route in Oravice is nature trail Route A, which has 22 stops and is 14.6 kilometres long. Hiking, cycling and winter sports are also available in the mountainous landscape of the Oravice recreation centre. Depending on your interests, you can choose the gorge in the Juráňova Valley, nature trail Route A or activities at the recreation centre. There are also three wooden shelters along a trail in Oravice where you can rest.
Cycling Routes and Activities in Town
Two different route descriptions are relevant to cyclists. The Tvrdošín section of the Kościelisko–Witów–Oravice–Tvrdošín cycling and hiking trail is 14.7 kilometres long. Tvrdošín is the last listed town on the 52.5-kilometre “Beneath the Roháče Mountains” cycling route. These figures refer to different routes and describe different distances: one is the Tvrdošín section, while the other is the total length of a route.
For activities in town, the K-PARK and the modular Adelaie pump track are other specific places to visit. K-PARK is located in the Medvedzie residential area between apartment buildings 50, 48 and 13. Its facilities include an outdoor table tennis table, a bouldering wall, skateboard features, bicycle racks and a basketball hoop. The Adelaie pump track is 159 metres long and is located next to the entrance to the municipal technical services complex. As facilities may change, we recommend checking before your visit.
