On the signposted cycling route section between Trstená and Suchá Hora, Tatra panoramas and bilingual information boards about the former railway accompany you along the way. In the village, Goral traditions and wooden houses offer insights into the local culture. Cycling, history and peatland landscapes provide different focuses for a stay in Suchá Hora.

Cycling Route and Railway History

The section between Trstená and Suchá Hora is equipped with traffic signs and additional facilities. Rest areas offer benches, tables, bicycle racks and rubbish bins. There are also two cycling information boards in Suchá Hora along the cross-border route. The boards about the former railway and its history give the cycling route a historical connection; the panoramas draw the eye towards the Tatra Mountains.

The former railway to Suchá Hora ran from Kraľovany and Trstená towards Nowy Targ and was extended to Poland in 1904. A 2019 route guide describes the Around the Tatras route as leading to the ruins of the former Suchá Hora railway station. From there, according to the guide, the main route continues for another 9 km through the green landscapes of Orava. Surfaces and conditions can change; check them before setting out.

Goral Traditions and Wooden Houses

Suchá Hora lies within the Goral dialect area in the western and northern part of Upper Orava, which comprises 24 municipalities. Traditions that remain alive include songs, music, folk costume and customs. The Goral dialect is still spoken. Goral folk costume resembles the costumes of Goral communities east of the Tatra Mountains and is worn on major church holidays and special occasions.

Dance is also part of this cultural heritage: dances associated with Suchá Hora include do zvíjania, goralský, zbojecký, košíček, kresaný and odzvodný. The Goral folk group maintains a repertoire of songs, dances and music from Hladovka and Suchá Hora. Goralská nedeľa is a recurring local folklore event; at the 14th edition, guests performed alongside local dancers and musicians. If an event is the reason for your trip, check the dates.

Wooden houses from the early 20th century contribute to the architectural character. They have three rooms and a masonry foundation; farm buildings often stand beneath a shared shingle-covered gable roof. The Church of Christ the King was built in 1934, consecrated after reconstruction on 6 August 1995, and renovated in 2021–2022. The parish publishes service times and church notices; check the times separately if your visit depends on them.

Historical and Landscape Connections

Suchá Hora was established during the Wallachian colonisation; the municipality was first mentioned in writing in 1566. From 1920 to 1924 and for several months in 1939, Suchá Hora belonged to Poland. The border crossing near Suchá Hora reopened on 1 May 1991. After Slovakia joined the Schengen Area on 21 December 2007, border checks were fully abolished.

A raised bog shaped by earlier surface peat extraction lies in the northern part of the cadastral area. Nearby is Rudné, an area of extensive forest bogs with a taiga-like character that continue seamlessly into Poland. Rudné is so far the only known site in Slovakia for the rare species skaliarka močiarna and serves as an ecological functional area for black grouse breeding grounds in the Horná Orava Bird Protection Area. Suchá Hora is also one of the cadastral areas within the Horná Orava Natura 2000 site. The Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Horná Orava), which extends to the Polish border, lies north of the village.

Consider Suchá Hora as a Destination

When deciding whether Suchá Hora suits your stay, its different highlights are easy to distinguish: the cycling route section combines scenic views and railway history; Goral traditions and wooden houses give the village a cultural focus; and the raised bog and Rudné add a natural dimension. If you are looking for accommodation in Suchá Hora, you can first decide which of these reasons is most important for your trip. If you plan to attend a church service, check the service times separately.
